Silas–who had been lingering against her lips–suddenly stopped. He slowly pulled back, creating a little distance between then Lifting his head, he looked at Emma with a wounded expression.
“So, what you mean is… before this, you really didn’t trust me?”
His voice was light, almost airy, but it instantly made Emma feel guilty.
“I… I didn’t mean that. I’ve always trusted you.” Her gaze shifted away as she tried to salvage the situation. “I was just… doing a routine check, that’s all.”
What’s going on here? I’m the huntress. What’s wrong with checking his lightcore? Where’s this guilty conscience coming from?
Silas watched her reaction but said nothing.
He simply lowered his eyes while the arm wrapped around her waist tightened slightly, pulling their bodies flush together as if or by holding her like this could he draw even a little sense of security from her.
“You don’t need to explain, Emy,” he replied. His voice even carried the faintest nasal tremor, making him sound pitiful. “You messaged me and specifically asked me to come back–not because you missed me, but to interrogate me. The moment we met. you didn’t want to hug me, didn’t want to kiss me. You only wanted to check my lightcore. You even made me swear an oath…”
He lifted his head. His eyes were already red–rimmed, and the flower wreath resting on his hair seemed to sense his emotions, the petals drooping listlessly.
“If that’s what you call trust, then I really don’t know what suspicion looks like.”
Silas buried his face in the crook of Emma’s neck. His warm breath brushed her collarbone, trembling slightly
“I thought you asked me back because you missed me. I was so happy on the way here… I even prepared a surpr voice trailed off.
Emma pressed her lips together. She knew the man was acting, but seeing him look this miserable still tugged at her heart
“I’m sorry. Really.” Emma hurried to apologize. She cupped his face and kissed him several times. “I was just so irritated by Corvin today that I lost my head. How could I not trust you? I trust you the most.”
Silas lowered his head and gently bit her earlobe.
The pitiful curve at his lips instantly vanished, replaced by a flash of triumph in his eyes. However, when he lifted his head again, he expression returned to that fragile, pitiful look.
“So, after doubting me like that, one light little ‘I trust you,‘ and that’s it?”
“What do you want me to do then?” Emma shot back.
Silas spoke quietly, his voice still carrying a trace of grievance. “I don’t want much. There’s a banquet tomorrow night. I just want you to attend it with me.”
Emma had thought it would be something serious. Turned out it was just a banquet.

“all them come find me at the Executive Department tomorrow afternoon, Silas said.
“The Banquet’s at night, in’t it? Why do I have to go see you so early?” Emma asked, puzzled.
“Because I miss you can’t come back to spend time with you, so you’ll have to come keep me company instead.”
has only sipped away briefly to come back. Soon, he would have to return again.
“Enty, you already promised me. No backing out.”
Emma looked at him and felt the urge to bite him. “I see it now. You’ve already planned this on your way back, haven’t you? You
new IG agree, didn’t you?”
His goal achieved, the grievance on Silas‘ face disappeared instantly. He smiled. “You’re wrong, Emy. I didn’t think of it on the way back I decided the moment I received your message.”
Exasperated, Emma thumped his chest. Just how many tricks does he have up his sleeve? How is he this calculating?
She was speechless. “You’re acting so obviously. Aren’t you afraid I might refuse?”
“But you already agreed.” Silas smiled and pulled her into his arms. “It’s precisely because I know that even if you realize I’m acting, you’ll still say yes. That’s why I dare behave so shamelessly.”
He lowered his head and gently pressed a kiss against Emma’s eyes. “Because I know you have a soft spot for me.”
Emma had nothing to say. When it came to Silas, she truly had no defense. It wasn’t favoritism. It was just that this man was far too good at what he did.
Silas glanced at the time on his lightcore and released Emma. “Time’s about up. I should head back.”
She stared at him in shock. “You’re leaving already?”
He felt quilty. He had really been too busy lately. He simply didn’t have time to stay with her.
“Emy, I’m really sorry. Once I get through this busy period, I’ll make it up to you.”
That wasn’t what Emma cared about, though. She cupped his face, her expression full of concern. “I’m worried about you.”
At her words, something like starlight seemed to swirl in Silas‘ eyes. “Knowing you’re concerned, no matter how busy tam, I won’t feel tired”
Soon after, Emma and Silas walked downstairs together.
