Carl gripped his glass tightly and replayed Noelle's words in his mind as he grew increasingly restless. He believed he'd done nothing wrong and was just trying to put everything back on track.
At that moment, his phone rang, and he glanced at the caller ID before picking up. "What's up?"
Donovan's voice came through the line. "So, has she woken up? She must know by now that she's stuck on that island, right?
"I'm just worried, knowing how stubborn and disobedient she could be. What if she does anything drastic?"
"She's calm right now and hasn't done anything out of line."
"I refuse to believe that. I know Noelle better than anyone; she'd never just accept it. We agreed that if she does try something reckless, you must send her away and never hurt her."
Carl impatiently said, "Relax. She's my sister, too, so why would I ever hurt her? She has everything she needs here—good food and care.
"She's just lost a little freedom, but that's fine."
"What did she say to you?" Donovan pressed on.
"Not much. She was upset at first, but I told her I'd let her go in a month."
Donovan frowned. "A month? If you're letting her go so soon, what's the point of all this? You should've never taken her in the first place, and now she's going to resent us even more."
"She'll willingly stay back in a month."
A chill ran through Donovan after hearing Carl's words. "What's that supposed to mean? What are you planning?
"She'll never willingly stay unless you're thinking of something extreme. Are you gonna erase her memory or lock her up forever on the island?"
"That's not your concern, and you'll see what I mean when the time comes," Carl snapped. With that, he ended the call.
Something told Donovan that things weren't right. He dialed again and again, and when Carl didn't pick up, an uneasy feeling gnawed at him.
