Chapter 5
Hope flared in my chest. I spun around and saw my son–covered in ash, clothes singed, but
alive.
I ran over, half–squatted, and hugged my son tightly.
Eric stood there as if struck by lightning, utterly dazed. He stared at the little boy, a smaller version of himself, as if he couldn’t believe his eyes.
Vivian’s eyes flashed with annoyance, but she quickly forced a shocked expression. “This…”
Eric hurried over, grabbed my arm, and asked urgently, “Is this my son? Is he really our son?”
I yanked my arm free, full of contempt. “No! He’s mine. He’s only my son.”
Ever since the day my son was born, I’d treated Eric as if he were dead. He never deserved to be my child’s father.
That’s why my son is registered under my name–he carries my last name, Brooks. His full name is Lucas Brooks.
Lucas had never seen Eric before. Thinking I was being bullied, he stomped over and pushed Eric with his tiny, dirty hands. “Don’t hurt my mom!”
He lifted his little, angry face–looking just like Eric when he was mad.
Eric was stunned, his mind completely blank.
Vivian clung to his arm, smirking, “No wonder she rushed the divorce. She’d been cheating all along and already had a child.”
Eric kept staring at Lucas, scrutinizing his face for a long time. Still unsure if Lucas was really

son,
I glared back coldly.
Vivian purposely asked Eric, “You haven’t even touched her in the last three years, have you?”
Eric answered right away, “No.”
The words hit him like a punch. His face darkened as he grabbed my collar, wounded and furious.
“So you really cheated on me? Who is he? Tell me–who’s this bastard’s father!”
Lucas ran over and bit Eric’s leg. “Don’t hurt my mom!”
Eric completely lost it. He kicked Lucas aside violently.

Lucas wailed in pain, sobbing loud and hard.
In a rage, I slapped Eric across the face.
“Touch my son again and see what happens! His dad is dead. Are you happy now?”
I glared at him, eyes blazing with rage, then slapped him again–hard.
Suddenly, someone shoved me hard in the chest, then a sharp slap landed across my face.
Vivian charged in, shielding Eric Carter with fury. “Madeline Brooks, what’s wrong with you? Eric is my man now. Try laying a finger on him again!”
