Chapter 718 All Wrong
She let out a slow breath and turned to Pedro. “Perhaps you and Fboth got this wrong.
“Mason was always the better fit for this family. If you hadn’t gone down this road, you would have had comfortable, enviable life for as long as you wanted it. Even without matching his ability, the Everest name alone would have sheltered you indefinitely.”
She shook her head and looked out the window at the tower that had once represented the Everett family’s peak. It looked different to her now, less like a monument and more like something already in the process of falling. “As things stand, even with me stepping back in personally, holding your position in that company is about the best you can hope for. Expansion and surpassing anyone is a conversation for a different reality entirely.”
Pedro listened to Wilda say what was essentially a quiet surrender, and the cold that had been building in him settled in permanently.
The drive back was filled with a silence that pressed against the walls of the car.
Beatrice sat in the passenger seat, the color gone from her face, and something dark and vicious slowly took shape in her eyes.
She turned to look at Pedro, her voice scraping out from somewhere below the surface. “What if we just do what we did with Evan? Find someone to take care of Mason and Amelia both.”
Pedro’s hands tightened on the wheel, and the car drifted slightly before he corrected.
He looked at her for a long moment with an expression that held too many things in it to name, then said after a stretch of heavy silence, “I’ll handle it.”
But what he was actually thinking was something else. Beatrice knew too many things that couldn’t be allowed to surface, and now both Lenny and Mason had their attention trained on her.
If he moved carefully enough, he could put everything on her and walk away clean.
Beatrice, for her part, wasn’t putting all her weight on Pedro either,
She had already started calculating.
If Pedro was beginning to crack and the Everett Group was shaking, she needed to extract whatever she could before he went under completely and took her down with him.
Two people with entirely different plans for each other shared the same car and drove toward their respective endings.
Amelia spent another two weeks at home.
She finished the complete design package for the fashion show without ever leaving the house.
Looking in the mirror one morning at a face that had gotten noticeably healthier, she decided she’d had enough. She turned to Mason, who was in the middle of cutting fruit for her, and announced firmly. “I’m

going back to work. I can’t sit here any longer.”
Mason knew better than to hight her on this. He also knew exactly how Amelia operated.
He smiled with the indulgent patience of someone who had already made his decision, and since Stardale was his company anyway, the location didn’t really change anything. He went with her.
They hadn’t been at the office for long when the news broke, spreading across the city in a matter of hours. Pedro, the acting president of the Everett Group, and Beatrice, heiress to the Harlow family, had been found dead together in their apartment.
Mason took Amelia and got to the hospital immediately. Wilda had collapsed when the news reached her and was currently in the emergency ward being stabilized.
After a thorough investigation, the police delivered their findings to Mason. It had not been a mutual suicide.
The two of them had been in the middle of a violent confrontation over what the investigators described as irreconcilable financial disputes.
Pedro had stabbed Beatrice during the struggle and killed her. He had then attempted to stage the scene to suggest he’d acted in self-defense after being attacked, but he had miscalculated the angle or the force, and in the process he had nicked his own artery. The blood loss had been rapid and fatal.
Nobody would ever know exactly what they had been fighting about in those final minutes.
When Amelia was permitted into the morgue and looked at Beatrice’s face, she saw an expression that had locked in place at the worst possible moment.
