Chapter 624
Genie Duncan nearly failed to hide her smile. She covered her mouth in mock surprise and turned to her husband, Cyrus Wolfen. “Oh, Cyrus, what are we supposed to do now?”
Eric’s expression changed completely. He did not spare Penelope a glance. His eyes locked on the driver. “What do you mean she is not a Hutton? If that’s true, then tell Raymond that the woman I want to marry has always. been the youngest heiress.”
“Mr. Wolfen, you should be careful with words like that,” the driver replied with a thin smile. “Our employer has a bad temper. I worry he might kill you.’
“1
He pressed the accelerator and prepared to leave.
Panic seized Eric. He ignored the mocking looks from his family and grabbed the car door. His voice dropped into a plea. “Please help me pass on a message to Raymond. I really can’t marry Penelope.”
Marriage to her would ruin him. She had no background, no intelligence, and no value. She would bring nothing but trouble.
The driver tapped the brake and glanced at him with calm indifference. “This order came from Ms. Diana. If you’re unwilling, you should go ask her yourself.”
Eric froze.
Ask Diana? Diana and James were worse than Raymond. They wore the mask of principle, but they destroyed people without shedding blood.
His throat tightened. At last, he gave up. “I understand.”
The driver said nothing more and drove off. The other cars followed.
Silence spread across the vast front yard. Only Penelope and the Wolfens remained.
Eric finally turned his dark gaze on her.
Penelope shivered. She had braced herself for this moment, yet the chill still crept through her.
The burns on his face looked vicious. Scar tissue twisted even his eyes.
Genie had not had enough fun. She sighed and spoke in a gentle, syrupy tone. “Eric, she may be a fake heiress from a poor background. She’s divorced and far beneath your sisters-in-law. Still, she’s carrying your child, and you wanted her so badly. Since Diana has spoken, I can’t stop it anymore. Congratulations. You finally got what you wanted.”
Each word cut like a blade. The message was clear: “Look at the trash you fought so hard to bring home.”
Eric swallowed the insult and forced a smile. “Thank you, Mother.”
Genie continued without mercy, “Since you’ll marry her, I’ll send staff to clean your place tomorrow. In a few days, you and what was her name, Penny? Can move out together.”
Eric argued at once, “Mother, I still want to stay here and keep Grandpa and Grandma company.”

“Why would they need you?” Genie scolded lightly. “Newlyweds should spend time together. Your wife and child come first now.”
He could not accept that. If he moved out, returning would become impossible.
He looked at his father for support, but Cyrus cut in sharply, “Do you have a problem with your stepmother’s arrangement? Look at the mess you’ve caused. Tomorrow, once the staff finish cleaning, you move out immediately.”
“All right, don’t shout at the child,” Genie said. She waved everyone toward the house. “It’s cold. Go rest.”
The rest of the family had seen enough and dispersed quickly. The elderly couple followed them inside.
Genie turned back once more. Her gaze lingered on Penelope’s abdomen with open contempt. “After the baby is born, get a DNA test right away. Our family may not compare to the Huttons or the Sterlings, but we don’t let just anyone in.” 1
She adjusted her shawl, put on a polite smile, and walked away.
Only Penelope and Eric remained.
Eric burned with anger after the public humiliation and his forced exile. He glared at Penelope, who kept her distance. “Why are you standing so far away? Are you afraid of me, or do you look down on me?”
“I’m not…”
“Then come here.” He seized her wrist and dragged her inside, up the stairs, and into a room.
The door slammed shut. His sneer twisted with malice. “You like climbing into rich families, don’t you? What are you afraid of? I’m still a Wolfen. How did you seduce Caleb before? Come on. Try it on me.”
Her back struck the wall. She trembled. “I didn’t seduce him. And I’m pregnant…”
