Chapter 138*
Angelina’s POV
I walked forward. Joined the group.
Saffron’s expression changed. First shock. Her eyes went wide. Her mouth pened slightly.
This random assignment clearly wasp
somethin
she’d expected.
But the shock only lasted a second.
Then her face transformed. A smile started at the corners of her mouth. Sread slowly across her face.
It wasn’t a friendly smile. It was the smile of someone who just realized they’d been handed a perfect opportunity.
She turned to Vanessa. Leaned close. Whispered something.
My hearing was better than she probably realized.
“This is perfect,” Saffron said. Her voice was low. Excited. “Four against on. She has zero chance.”
Vanessa whispered back. “What’s the play?”
“Subtle sabotage. Make it look like she’s incompetent. Like she can’t keep up with the team.”
Jason joined their huddle. “We need to be careful. The instructors review all the recordings.”
“I know,” Saffron said. “Nothing obvious. Just small things. Delayed information. Poor positioning. Make her look like the weak link.”
Ethan nodded. “I can handle cutting off her support at critical moments. Make it seem accidental.”
“Perfect.” Saffron’s smile got wider. “By the end of this exercise, everyone will see she doesn’t belong here.”
The instructor finished reading the remaining team assignments.
Felix spoke again. “All teams proceed to the briefing room. You have ten minutes to review your mission parameters.”
Everyone started moving.
Our team walked together toward Building Four. Where the briefing room was located.
Saffron was in front. Vanessa beside her. Jason and Ethan behind them.
I walked at the back. Keeping distance.
Nobody spoke to me. They were too busy whispering among themselves.
We reached the briefing room. It was a large space with rows of seats facing a projection screen.

Chapter 138*
All seven teams filed in. Found their designated seating areas.
Team Seven was in the third row. We sat down.
Saffron took the center seat. Vanessa on her right. Jason on her left. Ethan next to Jason.
That left one seat. Far right. Away from the others.
I sat down.

Felix walked to the front of the room. The lights dimmed. The projection creen lit up.
A detailed city map appeared. Multi-story buildings. Streets. Alleyways.
“Your mission is as follows,” Felix began. “Terrorist group has taken three civilian hostages in this building.”
He pointed to a five-story structure in the center of the map.
“Your objective is stealth infiltration and hostage extraction. You will be equipped with simulated weapons. Paint rounds. If you’re hit, you’re eliminated from the scenario.”
The map zoomed in. Showed the building’s layout.
“Five floors. Multiple entry points. Enemy forces are AI-controlled.”
He paused. “By AI-controlled, I mean real people. Trained actors wearing sensor equipment. They will react to your movements and tactics.”
The screen changed. Showed equipment lists.
“Each team receives standard tactical gear. Communication headsets. Simulated weapons. Flashbangs. Smoke grenades. Body armor.”
Felix looked around the room. “Time limit is forty-five minutes from mission start. If you exceed that, mission fails automatically.”
Someone raised their hand. “What if we eliminate all hostiles but don’t extract the hostages in time?”
“Mission fails,” Felix said flatly. “Time management is part of the assessment.”
The screen showed the scoring rubric again.
“This is a team exercise. Individual heroics will not earn you bonus points. Coordination and communication are key.”
Felix gestured to the assistant instructors. “You have fifteen minutes to strategize with your team. Use that time wisely.”
The lights came back up slightly.
Felix left the room. The assistant instructors spread out. Monitoring the teams.
Team Seven turned their chairs to face each other.
Saffron stood up immediately. Her voice was confident. Commanding.

Chapter 138 *
“Alright team, listen up. I have three years of military training experience should lead this mission.”
She looked at Vanessa, Jason, and Ethan. Waiting.
Vanessa nodded. ‘Makes sense. You’ve got the most experience.”
Jason agreed. “I’m good with that.”
Ethan just raised his hand. “Yeah, sure.”
Then Saffron turned to me. Her eyes had that challenging look.
*Sterling, do you have any leadership experience?”
“No.”
“Then you’re okay with me leading?”
“Yes.”

Saffron’s smile got wider. Satisfied. “Good. Then let’s talk strategy.”
She pulled out the mission briefing paper. Spread it on the desk between us.
“Five floors. Three hostages. Unknown number of enemies. We need to move fast and coordinated.”

Her finger traced the building layout. “I’ll take point with Vanessa and Jason. We go through the main entrance. Standard breach and clear.”
She looked at Ethan. “You handle perimeter security and communication. Make sure no enemies flank us from outside.”
Ethan nodded. “Got it.”
Then Saffron’s finger moved to the back of the building. Where the fire escape was marked.
“Sterling, you take the solo infiltration route. Fire escape at the back. You climb up, draw enemy attention, create an opportunity for the main
team.”
I looked at the map. The fire escape was completely exposed. No cover. Anyone climbing it would be visible from multiple angles.
“This position is critical,” Jason said. His voice was helpful. Too helpful. “You’ll need excellent timing and stealth. Can you handle that?”
‘Yes.
Saffron leaned forward slightly. “If you think it’s too difficult, you can say so now. We can swap positions. I don’t want to force team members to do things beyond their capability.”
The underlying message was clear. She was questioning whether I could do it.
“I don’t need to swap.

Chapter 138 *
“You’re sure?” Vanessa asked. “Because once we start, there’s no changing the plan.”
‘I’m sure.”
Saffron smiled. “Excellent. Then we’re all set.*
She started going over timing details. Entry sequences. Communication protocols.
I listened. Memorized everything. But I noticed things.
The way Saffron positioned herself and her friends together. The way my foute was completely isolated from theirs. The way the plan put
maximum risk on me with zero backup.
If anything went wrong on the fire escape, the entire mission would fail. And the blame would fall on me.
Perfect setup for sabotage.
At one forty-five, all teams moved to the equipment room.
Rows of tactical gear lined the walls. Vests, helmets, weapons, communication equipment.
Team Seven walked in together. Saffron immediately went to the best tactical vest on the rack. Grabbed it.
“This one’s mine,” she said. Started putting it on.
