Angelina’s POV

At two PM, all teams were loaded into vans and driven to the simulation site.

The abandoned industrial complex was about fifteen minutes from the main compound. Old warehouses. Empty office buildings. Crumbling concrete everywhere.

They’d converted it into an urban combat training ground. Realistic as possible.

Our van stopped in front of a five-story office building. Windows mostly broken. Graffiti on the walls. It looked like it hadn’t been used in

decades.

Felix stood outside with his tablet. “Team Seven, this is your target building. You have five minutes to reach your starting positions. Mission

clock starts at fourteen-ten hours.”

We got out of the van. Started unloading our gear.

Saffron gathered us together. “Remember the plan. Main team enters through the front after Sterling creates the diversion from the fire escape.

Questions?

Nobody said anything.

“Good. Sterling, move to your position now. Wait for my signal before you start climbing.”

I nodded. Walked around the side of the building.

The back area was overgrown with weeds. Broken glass crunched under my boots. The fire escape was exactly as the map showed. Rusted metal

stairs zigzagging up the back of the building.

I found cover behind a dumpster. Checked my watch. Three minutes until mission start.

My earpiece crackled. Saffron’s voice. “All positions ready. Sterling, confirm you’re in position.”

I pressed the transmit button. “In position.”

There was that half-second delay again before my transmission went through.

“Copy that,” Saffron said. “Remember, wait for my signal. Don’t move until tell you.”

“Understood.”

The next two minutes crawled by. I watched the building. Counted windows. Memorized the layout.

At exactly fourteen-ten, Felix’s voice came through all our earpieces. “Mission clock is now active. You have forty-five minutes. Begin.”

Saffron’s voice immediately followed. “Main team moving to entry point. Sterling, stand by.”

I waited. Watched the fire escape. There was movement on the second floor. A patrol.

Chapter 139*

The enemy actors were good. They moved like real security personnel. Careful. Alert.

“Sterling, begin your approach now,” Saffron said.

I looked at my watch. The main team should still be getting into position This timing was early.

But I started moving anyway. Left the cover of the dumpster. Moved toward the fire escape. I kept low. Used the debris and overgrown vegetation as cover.

The first-floor platform of the fire escape was about eight feet off the ground. I’d need to climb up.

I was halfway there when my earpiece crackled. Vanessa’s voice.

“Contact. Two enemies on the west side. They’re moving away from the fire escape.”

West side. That was opposite from where I was approaching.

I continued forward. Reached the fire escape. Grabbed the lowest rung of the ladder.

Then I heard footsteps. Two enemy actors came around the corner. They were on the east side. Not the west.

Vanessa had given me the wrong information.

Both actors raised their weapons. Paint rounds loaded.

I dropped immediately. Let go of the ladder. Rolled behind a concrete barrier.

Paint rounds hit the wall where I’d been standing a second ago. Bright orange splatter.

“Contact on the fire escape!” one of the actors shouted. His voice carried up the building.

More footsteps above. The patrol on the second floor was responding.

My earpiece crackled. Saffron’s voice was sharp. “Sterling! What happened? You were supposed to maintain stealth!”

I didn’t respond. Too busy moving.

The two actors were advancing on my position. I could hear them communicating. Coordinating.

I moved left. Stayed low. Used the rusted equipment scattered around the area as cover.

One actor came around the barrier. I was already gone. Moved to a new position behind an old oil drum.

From here I had a clear shot at the fire escape. The second-floor platform

I raised my rifle. Aimed carefully. The actor on the second floor was leaning over the railing. Looking for me.

I squeezed the trigger. Paint round hit him center mass. He cursed. Stepped back.

The sensor vest he was wearing lit up red. He was eliminated.

Chapter 139 *

“One hostile down on second floor,’ I said into my earpiece.

The transmission delay meant my words came through a half-second late

The two actors on ground level were getting closer to my position. I needed to move again.

I ran toward a stack of pallets. Slid into cover just as more paint rounds it where I’d been.

The noise was attracting attention. I could hear more movement inside the building. More enemies responding.

“Sterling, you’re compromising the entire operation!” Saffron’s voice was angry. “You were supposed to draw them quietly!”

I spotted one of the ground-level actors moving between cover points. Took my shot. Hit him in the shoulder.

His vest lit up red.

“Two hostiles down,” I reported.

The last ground-level actor was being more cautious now. He’d taken cover behind the building’s corner. I couldn’t get a clean shot.

Inside the building, I could hear movement. Footsteps on stairs. They were repositioning.

“Main team, what’s your status?” I asked.

Saffron responded immediately. “We’re encountering heavy resistance at the front entrance. We need suppressive fire on our position.”

That wasn’t the plan. The plan was for me to create the diversion so they could enter unopposed.

A third enemy actor appeared on the fire escape. He had angle on my position.

I moved before he could fire. Rolled to new cover. Paint round hit the ground where I’d been.

“I need support on the fire escape,” I said into my earpiece.

Jason’s voice came through. “Copy that. Moving to provide fire support.”

I waited. Counted seconds.

The enemy was leaning over the railing. Trying to get a shot. The ground level enemy was advancing from the corner.

I was running out of cover options.

“Jason, where’s that support?” I asked.

“Moving into position now,” he said.

But I didn’t see him. Didn’t hear any fire from the support position he was supposed to take.

The enemy fired. Paint round hit my shoulder armor. Glancing blow. Didn’t register on my vest sensors.

Chapter 139*

I returned fire. Missed. He’d ducked back.

The ground-level enemy was closer now. Maybe twenty feet.

I switched position again. Moved to a concrete pillar. Better cover but fewer escape routes.

“Jason, I need that fire support now.”

“I’m encountering resistance on my approach,” he said. “Can’t reach the support position.”

That was a lie. I could hear the audio background on his transmission. No gunfire. No movement.

Fine. I’d handle this myself.

The ground-level enemy came around the pillar. We were face to face. Maybe ten feet apart.

We both fired simultaneously.

My shot hit him center mass. His vest lit

up red.

His shot went wide. Hit the wall behind me.

“Three hostiles eliminated,” I reported.

I didn’t wait for acknowledgment. Moved toward the fire escape while the enemy was still in cover.

Reached the ladder. Started climbing fast.

Paint rounds hit the metal stairs around me. The enemy had leaned back out.

I kept climbing. Reached the second-floor platform. Rolled onto it.

More paint rounds hit the railing. I crawled to the door. It was unlocked.

Pulled it open. Went inside.

The second-floor corridor was dark. Emergency lighting only. Flickering and dim.

I could hear footsteps above me. And below me. Enemies repositioning.

“Main team, what’s your status?” I asked again.
