Chapter 148 *
Angelina’s POV
The warrior’s eyes widened. Just slightly. “You want us to tell Alpha Thorn that you… might consider…”
“You heard me.”
Behind him, the other warriors were trying very hard not to smile. A few of them failed. Their lips twitched.
“We will deliver your message exactly as stated, Lun-” He caught himself. Miss Sterling.”
“Good.”
I turned and walked toward the exit. Didn’t wait for their response.
I emerged on the other side of the maze. The staging area was completely silent. Everyone was staring at me.
Caelan stood on the platform. His expression was carefully controlled but saw something flicker in his eyes.
He knew exactly what I’d done.
He checked his tablet. His voice was flat. “Zero points. No sensor hits registered.”
The crowd erupted.
“What?”
“She got zero too?”
“I heard at least ten shots! How did she miss everything?”
Saffron’s voice cut through the noise. Loud. Triumphant. “See? I told you Sterling wasn’t special! She failed just like everyone else!”
People were laughing now. Relieved. Some looked satisfied that I hadn’t succeeded where they’d failed.
Michael Anderson looked confused. “But I heard the shots. They soundedfferent from mine. More precise.”
‘Doesn’t matter how they sounded,” someone said. “Zero points is zero points.”
I walked back to the staging area. Didn’t react to any of the comments.
Found a spot away from everyone. Sat down.
Riley appeared next to me. She looked concerned. “Are you okay? I thought for sure you’d score high on this test.”
“The sensors didn’t register.”
“Yeah, but how? You were in there for less than three minutes. That’s faster than anyone else. You must have hit something.”

I didn’t answer. Just watched as the next candidate was called.

They continued going through the remaining candidates. Same pattern. Mostly zeros. A few people managed grazing shots worth two points. One person got five points with a solid hit.
By the thirtieth candidate, people had accepted that this test was nearly impossible.
“Only three people got any points at all,” someone said. “This is insane.”
“At least Sterling failed too. Makes me feel better.”
“Yeah. Turns out she’s not as good as everyone thought.”
I kept my expression neutral. Let them think whatever they wanted.
The testing continued. More candidates. More failures.
The results were posted exactly thirty minutes after the shooting test ended.
I walked over with everyone else. Found my name on the digital display.
Sterling, Aria: 0/20
Zero points. Same as most people.
The cumulative rankings updated on the screen. I was still at rank eleven. Since almost everyone scored zero, the positions barely shifted.
Behind me, I heard Saffron’s voice. “See? Sterling got zero just like the rest of us. Proves she’s nothing special.”
Vanessa laughed. “All that hype for nothing.”
I didn’t turn around. Didn’t waste energy on them.
Caelan’s voice carried across the training area. “Listen up. Results are final No appeals. No complaints.”
Everyone turned to face him.
“You have thirty minutes of rest before the next assessment. Use this time wisely.” He pointed toward a shaded area where tables had been set up. Water coolers. Protein bars. Energy drinks.
People started moving toward the rest area. Some walked slowly. Others actically ran. Everyone was exhausted.
I walked at a normal pace. Got a bottle of water. Grabbed two protein bars
Found a spot away from the main crowd. Sat down on the ground. Back against a shipping container. Opened the first protein bar. Ate slowly.
Around the training area, candidates were scattered in small groups. Some were eating. Others were lying on the ground trying to rest. A few were doing light stretches.
I checked my internal clock. About fifteen minutes had passed. Fifteen mare until the break ended. I closed my eyes. Let my body relax.

Conserved energy. The conversations around me blurred into background noise. I focused on my breathing.
Time passed.
Then I heard it. A sound that didn’t fit. A body hitting the ground.
My eyes snapped open.
About thirty feet away, a candidate had collapsed. Just dropped where he been standing.
“What the hell?” someone shouted.
People nearby rushed over. “Are you okay? Hey! Can you hear me?”
The fallen candidate didn’t respond. Didn’t move.
Someone checked his pulse. “He’s breathing but he’s not waking up!”
More people gathered around. Concerned voices overlapping.
“What happened?”
“Did he pass out from exhaustion?”
“Should we get a medic?”
“Where’s Felix? Has anyone seen Felix?”
I stood up slowly. Looked around the training area.
Felix had been here two minutes ago. Standing near the platform. Now he was gone.
That was wrong. Instructors didn’t just leave during rest periods.
Another candidate stumbled. Grabbed onto someone next to them. “I feel dizzy…”
Then they collapsed too.
Panic started spreading through the crowd. “What’s going on?”
I stayed where I was. Didn’t move closer to the fallen candidates.
Instead, I focused on my senses. Listened. Smelled the air.
There. Faint but distinct. Chemical scent. Sweet and slightly acidic. Almos imperceptible unless you knew what to look for.
Aerosol dispersant.
I scanned the area. The scent was getting stronger. Spreading.

A third candidate went down. Then a fourth.
“Everyone stay calm!” someone shouted. “We need to find the instructors
“Where did they go? They were just here!”
More bodies hitting the ground. The sound was everywhere now. Candidates dropping one after another.
Someone tried to run toward the exit. Made it maybe ten steps before his legs gave out. He crashed into the dirt.
Around me, the chaos was ending. Because everyone was unconscious now. Bodies everywhere. Some had collapsed mid-run. Others had simply dropped where they stood.
The chemical scent was thick in the air now. No longer subtle. A visible mist hung near the ground.
I stood there. The only person still on their feet. The only one still conscious.
Looked at all the fallen candidates. My mind was completely calm.
This aerosol compound was well-designed. Fast-acting. Broad-spectrum effectiveness. Probably affected ninety-nine percent of people within
