1 stopped walking. Riley and Chen continued a few steps before realizing wasn t following

“Aria? You coming? Riley called back.

Riley looked uncertain. “You sure?”

They headed toward the crowd. I turned to walk in the opposite direction Back toward the barracks.

Female candidates were practically mobbing the formation. Keeping a respectful distance but only barely.

I kept walking. Then I heard Saffron’s voice. Of course she was there.

Vanessa laughed. “Saffron, you can’t just claim a person.”

“Watch me. If he’s single, I’m making my move.”

More giggling from her group. Then I heard something that made me paus

The crowd had gone quiet. Completely silent.

1 turned around. Looked back toward the training field.

Carlan was moving, Walking Not toward his helicopters. Toward me.

His stride was purposeful. Direct. Like he had a target and nothing was going to stop him from reaching it.

The crowd was parting around him. People stepping back. Making way.

His expression was the same cold mask. But his eyes were locked on me.

And as he got closer, something in his face changed. The ice melted. The hard edges softened.

By the time he was twenty feet away, he was looking at me the way he had in that room. Like I was the only person in the world.

Behind him, the entire crowd was frozen. Staring.

Felix continued. “Graham was recommended directly by a four-star general. No one here outranks his authority on this selection.”

The crowd went even quieter. That was serious. That was way above normal instructor level.

Saffron was panicking now. Real panic. Her voice was getting higher. More desperate.
