Chapter 8 *
Angelina’s POV
And in the center, sitting at our dining table like he owned the place, was man covered in tattoos.
Neck. Arms. Hands.
He had a butterfly knife in his hand. Flipping it open and closed. Click–click. Click–click.
Mom was standing a few feet away from him. Her hands were clasped together. Her whole body was shaking.
“Aria?” Leo’s voice pulled me back. “What’s wrong?”
I didn’t answer.
Because I was too busy watching what happened next.
Mom’s voice carried through the window, Thin. Desperate.
“Please, Jayden. Just give us a few more weeks. When we get paid, we’ll start paying you back. I swear-*
“Shut the fuck up!”

Jayden’s fist slammed into the table.
Mom jumped back.
“Your husband’s little business venture went belly–up months ago! Jayden stood up, getting in her face. “That money’s gone. And you still owe me fifty thousand dollars plus interest!
Fifty thousand.
Jesus.
“We’re trying, Mom said. Her voice cracked. “We’re working as much as we can-
“Not good enough.
Jayden stepped closer. Towering over her.
“You got until Monday to come up with at least ten grand. Cash.”
“We don’t have-
“Then you better find it.” His voice dropped to something cold. Dangerous Because if you don’t, I’m taking collateral.”
Mom’s face went white. “What?”
“Your kids. He said it casually. Like he was discussing the weather. I got buyers who’ll pay top dollar for fresh organs. Kidneys especially.

Young ones are worth more.”
My whole body went rigid.
“No Mom’s voice broke. Please, not my children-

Or Jayden smiled. It was the kind of smile that made my skin crawl. “That pretty little daughter of yours? She could make us some money
another way. If you know what I mean.”
One of his guys laughed “She’s a virgin, right? Those sell better.”
Another one cracked his knuckles, I call dibs on breaking her in.”
Mom made a sound like she’d been punched.
“So you got a choice, Grace. Jayden flipped his knife closed. Slipped it in his pocket. “Ten grand by Monday. Or we start taking pieces of your
family
“Please.” Her voice broke. Please, Jayden. They’re just kids. They didn’t do anything wrong-
“Neither did I. Jayden lit a cigarette. Took a long drag. “Your husband’s the one who got scammed. Not my problem his business partner ran off
with the money.
“But we never borrowed from you! Nathan’s partner did-
And Nathan signed the papers, Jayden blew smoke in her face. “That makes it his debt. Your debt.”
One of his guys laughed. “Shoulda read the fine print, lady.”
Mom was crying now. Full–on sobbing. “We don’t have ten thousand dollar. We barely make rent-
Then I guess we’re going with option two. Jayden stood up, towering over her.
You sick fuck- The words burst out before I could stop them.
But they didn’t come from me.
Lew
He’d burst through the front door, his whole body shaking with rage.
“You think you can just come into our house and threaten us? Threaten sister?”
‘Leo, no- Mom grabbed his arm. “Baby, please, just run-
“I’m not running!” He jerked free. Faced Jayden straight on. My dad didn borrow shit from you! His partner did! You can’t hold us responsible
for someone else’s crime!”
Jayden tilted his head. Studied Leo like he was a bug.

I stayed where I was, just outside the window. Watching.
This is familiar, I thought. Scum like this. I’ve seen it a thousand times.
In my old life, men like jayden were insects. Small–time thugs who though they had power because they could hurt people weaker than them.
They usually ended up in pieces.
“Grace.” Jayden’s voice went cold. “Get your son under control. Now.”
Leo, please Mom’s hands were shaking. Just go. Take Aria and go-
“I said I’m not running!”
Jayden sighed Nodded to his guys.
Two of them grabbed Leo. One twisted his arm behind his back. The other locked his neck in a chokehold.
“Let him go!” Mom lunged forward.
Someone caught her. Held her back.
“Please! He’s just a boy! He doesn’t understand-
“Oh, he’s about to understand. Jayden walked over to Leo. Grabbed his face. Squeezed his jaw. “You’re a good–looking kid. Shame about what’s
gonna happen to you.
Leo struggled. Couldn’t move.
Jayden pulled out his butterfly knife again. Flipped it open.
Click–click.
The blade caught the light.
