Chapter 73

Alaric let out a wry chuckle, shaking his head in self-deprecation.

He’d never gone to such lengths to win a woman’s favor. He’d swallowed his pride and humbled himself, yet she remained completely unfazed.

‘She might as well be wearing armor,’ he thought. ‘Nothing gets through.’

“Take your medicine.” Ophelia held out the pills, her voice flat and unreadable.

Alaric arched a brow and accepted them with a resigned air, swallowing the tablets without another moment’s hesitation.

“Here.” She offered him the water glass.

Only after watching him drink did a trace of tension ease from her posture.

‘Finally. He really is so stubborn,’ she thought.

“And this.” She then placed a small jar on his desk. “It’s a herbal ointment I make myself. Good for scars. Use it after the wound closes up.”

“Always the thorough professional, aren’t we?” Alaric’s tone dripped with sarcasm.

Ophelia gave a faint smile. “I’ll take that as professional praise.”

He shook his head in defeat. She really knew how to get under his skin.

Her mood lifted noticeably at his exasperation.

“You’re still recovering, so don’t push yourself. Rest properly. Your health comes before work,” she said, her tone softer now, almost gentle.

Whether it was the medication or exhaustion, a heavy drowsiness began to settle over Alaric.

He met her eyes, his voice quieter than before. “I’ll rest.”

“And take your medicine on time. You’re a grown man. I never took you for the type to fuss over pills.” A hint of laughter tinged her words. The thought of the unshakable Alaric being reluctant to take medicine was almost endearing.

His expression tightened at her amusement.

“It’s not the pills,” he muttered under his breath. It was her indifference that bothered him.

“Of course,” she replied lightly, her tone full of playful insincerity. “A man of your stature wouldn’t be troubled by something so trivial.”

Alaric rubbed his temples, caught somewhere between irritation and amusement. “If only your flattery sounded slightly more genuine.”

“We can always hope,” she said, shrugging innocently.

Seeing him so thoroughly vexed, Ophelia found her annoyance with her difficult patient beginning to fade. At that moment, a knock echoed through the room.

“Come in.” Alaric’s voice was low and curt.

The door opened to reveal Ryan peering cautiously inside. His eyes sought out Ophelia, a hopeful gleam in them. “Ms. Rowle, how is Mr. Caldwell doing?”

“He’ll be fine after some rest and the medication,” Ophelia reassured him. “Just make sure he actually gets some proper downtime.”

“Got it.” Ryan’s gaze softened with genuine gratitude. “Thank you so much, Ms. Rowle. I honestly didn’t know what to do. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your help.”

He’d been genuinely concerned that pushing through work while ill would worsen Alaric’s condition.

With numerous critical meetings and commitments on the horizon, none of which could afford delays, he’d

felt he had no choice but to reach out to Ophelia.

“Believe me, I get it. He’s not the most cooperative patient,” Ophelia remarked dryly. Alaric’s stubbornness really did rival that of a petulant child. No wonder Ryan seemed so helpless.

“You have no idea how much it means to hear you say that,” Ryan breathed, his relief so palpable he looked close to tears, as if he’d finally found someone who understood his predicament.

A dark scowl settled on Alaric’s face. “Do you two mind not talking about me like I’m not even here?” he bit out,
