Chapter 80
Chapter 80
“No way, you must be mistaken,” Layla responded dismissively, though a hint of doubt lingered in her voice. Ignoring her skepticism, Maxwell kept his eyes fixed on the distant car, his expression thoughtful.
Meanwhile, Abigail saw no reason to connect Adrian with Ophelia. Growing impatient as more people emerged from the building, she approached a passerby. “Excuse me, is Mr. Rowle still inside?”
“Mr. Rowle?” The man paused momentarily before answering. “He never showed up today.”
“That’s impossible,” Abigail insisted, her voice sharp with disbelief. “I was told he’d be attending.” “Well,” the man explained, “the Rowle family was represented by his daughter tonight.”
As he turned to leave, Abigail grabbed his arm. “Where is she now?”
Meeting any member of the Rowle family, whether Adrian himself or his daughter, would salvage their opportunity.
“Ms. Rowle has already left,” the man said, nodding toward the driveway. “She was in the car that just pulled away. I assumed you recognized the vehicle.”
“That car?” Abigail’s face went pale as the pieces clicked into place.
Cameron, Layla, and Maxwell crowded closer, their faces mirroring the same stunned disbelief.
The memory suddenly surfaced in their minds, Ophelia mentioning her last name was Rowle.
Maxwell swallowed nervously. “I told you that car looked like it belonged to the Rowles,” he said, voice tight. Now what?”
“Cameron…” Abigail’s mind reeled, struggling to process the impossible reality unfolding before her.
“They must have made a mistake,” she muttered under her breath. “There’s just no way.”
A troubling thought crossed her mind. ‘How could the janitor’s daughter be riding in the Rowles’ car? Unless she really is Mr. Rowle’s daughter?’
“1
“Impossible. I know my adoptive parents’ family situation better than anyone. There’s no way she could be the Rowle family’s daughter.” The news was too shocking, and Layla could barely maintain her usual facade of fragility.
She thought to herself, ‘Ophelia should be suffering back where she belongs. How could she possibly be living a good life? What does that make all the hardships I’ve endured over the years?’
To their dismay, they waited until the crowd had completely dispersed, but Adrian never appeared. Instead, they were subjected to even more stories about Ophelia’s dazzling evening.
“She was there representing the Rowles?” Layla’s face drained of all color, the words landing like a physical blow.
“Not just that. She performed. Got a standing ovation,” Maxwell added. He turned to his father, a calculated persuasion in his tone. “Dad, what if we reached out to Ophelia? If this is real, Aaron’s legal troubles could vanish overnight.”
In his mind, a performance at that gala meant one thing: the Rowles’ influence. And that kind of influence could smooth his own path into the entertainment industry.
“I’ll have someone look into this,” Cameron replied, his composed facade masking inner turmoil.
His initial assumption, that Ophelia had merely attached herself to a man of some standing, now seemed dangerously naive. If she was indeed connected to the Rowles by blood, the potential upside for their family was monumental.
“Don’t be absurd, Cameron, Abigail cut in, her voice sharp with resentment. “Aaron’s situation is that girl’s doing. Why would she help us, even if she could?”
“Mom is right,” Layla chimed in, clinging desperately to the hope that it was all a lie. “There’s no proof any of

this is real. For all we know, she’s just cozying up to one of the Rowle sons.”
“Who cares?” Maxwell pressed, turning back to his mother. “You heard what those people said. Even if she’s not a Rowle by blood, she’s clearly close to them.
“We have to try, for Aaron’s sake! Just think about him. If he ends up in prison, what kind of future will he have?”
In truth, Maxwell was thinking of his own future; any privilege Aaron gained through Ophelia would inevitably benefit him as well.
But Abigail remained unmoved. “You’re all being deceived. She could never be a Rowle.”
She found Layla’s theory far more plausible. Any connection Ophelia had to the prestigious family was surely something illicit.
“Mom?” Maxwell was taken aback. It was the first time his mother had so flatly refused him.
Abigail fell into a stubborn silence, refusing to entertain the notion any further.
“Dad, what do you think?” Maxwell placed all his hopes on his father now.
Cameron glanced at each of them, his expression unreadable. “Let’s go home for now.”
It was clear they wouldn’t be meeting Adrian today. However, uncovering the truth about Ophelia’s identity was now a priority.
They needed to find out why she never returned to her cleaner adoptive parents and, most importantly, determine the exact nature of her relationship with the powerful Rowle family.
Cameron was jolted from his thoughts by the sudden ring of his phone.
Glancing at the screen, he answered with a curt, “What is it?”
A moment later, his voice sharpened with disbelief. “What did you just say?”
The others turned to him in unison, sensing something was terribly wrong.
“I’ll be right there.” Hanging up, Cameron looked uncharacteristically flustered. “I need to get to the office. Take a taxi home.”
“But Cameron…” Abigail began, only to watch him hurry to his car and drive off, leaving the rest of them standing there in bewildered silence.
“Mom, what’s going on?” Layla asked nervously, unsettled by her father’s abrupt departure.
Maxwell frowned. “Sounded like it was Carter on the phone. Maybe something happened at the company?”
“Let’s just go home and wait for news,” Abigail said, her expression grim.
The day had been a string of frustrations, and this latest disruption only deepened her irritation.
With their plans thwarted, the three hailed a taxi and left the venue, anxiety hanging heavy in the air.
