Chapter 86

Chapter 86

“Enough,” Jameson’s tone left no room for argument. “This isn’t up for discussion. The decision stands, regardless of what any of you say.”

After all, nobody challenged the principal’s directives and expected to win.

A faint smirk touched Ophelia’s lips as she watched Daphne’s frustration, almost as if she was silently egging her on.

“But Mr. Wells…” Daphne started again, provoked beyond caution.

Jameson’s expression hardened, his voice dropping to a warning pitch. “One more word, Daphne, and it’s a formal demerit. Need I remind you that students with disciplinary marks don’t remain in the advanced class?”

The room went utterly still. While everyone guarded their grades fiercely, the threat of expulsion from the advanced program was far more terrifying.

Defeated but seething, Daphne dropped into her seat, shooting a look of pure venom at Ophelia.

‘Just you wait,’ she vowed silently. ‘I’ll make sure you’re out of this class before long.’

With peace temporarily restored, Ophelia turned to Jameson with calm composure. “Sir, where would you like me to sit?”

Jameson blinked in surprise at her composure. “I, uh…” He hadn’t expected such poise after what just happened.

Ophelia’s smile deepened slightly. “Should I take that as there being no seat for me?”

Snapping to attention, Jameson hastily gestured to an empty chair. “Of course not. Please, take that seat.”

“Thank you.” Ophelia made her way to the seat, setting down her backpack with effortless grace.

It made little difference to her which class she attended as she rarely showed up to school anyway.

Now that she was here, transferring seemed like unnecessary trouble.

The residual tension in the classroom might as well have been happening in another dimension for all the attention she paid it.

Watching her settle in, Jameson felt an unexpected spark of amusement. There was something compelling about her unshakable poise.

“Jaxon, bring two others to help me fetch the new textbooks,” he announced. “The rest of you stay here.” He paused, then added meaningfully, “and use this time to properly welcome our new classmate.”

As the classroom door closed behind Jameson and the small group, a hesitant silence lingered before conversations gradually resumed.

“Hi, I’m Ruby,” the girl beside Ophelia greeted with a warm smile. “Looks like we’ll be neighbors.”

Ophelia met her gaze, returning a subtle but genuine smile. “Hello.”

Leaning in slightly, Ruby lowered her voice to a conspiratorial tone. “Don’t worry about the others. If you ever need help catching up, just ask. I have a feeling you’ll do just fine here.”

There was something about the new student’s quiet composure that made Ruby want to extend a friendly hand.

A soft laugh escaped Ophelia’s lips. “I appreciate that.” Though she knew with certainty that such academic support would be unnecessary.

The notion of her dragging down class averages was almost amusing.

Across the room, Daphne’s glare remained fixed on Ophelia, her patience wearing thin. “Tell me, Ophelia,” she called out, her voice sharp enough to draw attention, “do you actually think you belong in the advanced class?”

The sight of Ophelia sitting there so comfortably felt like a personal provocation.

She thought, ‘She waltzes into Dunhollow University through connections, and now she expects to keep up with the rest of

us?’

A faint, derisive smile touched Ophelia’s lips. “I’m already here, aren’t I?”

“You know exactly what I mean,” Daphne retorted, her face flushing with anger. “Some of us earned our spots.”

Ophelia’s expression remained unshaken. “If I’m here, it’s because I deserve to be.”

For a moment, Daphne could only stare in dist Successfully unlocked! ful laugh. “You’ll say anything to stay, won’t

you?”

‘The only thing she deserves is special treatment, she fumed.

“Daphne,” a timid voice interrupted. Zoe approached cautiously, her hands clasped nervously. “Let’s not make this harder for Ophelia. Getting into Dunhollow University was difficult enough. Maybe having her here isn’t so bad. We could help her fit in.”

“Are you out of your mind?” Daphne scowled at Zoe, her voice dripping with disdain. “After all the times she’s walked all over you, you’re still taking her side?”

Her eyes swept over Ophelia’s composed figure before adding, “Besides, does she look like she needs our help?”

If anything, they were the ones who should be cautious. Ophelia seemed perfectly capable of holding her own.

“I…” Zoe’s voice trailed off as she bit her lower lip, the perfect picture of wounded innocence.

A glint of amusement flashed in Ophelia’s eyes. There went Zoe, playing the victim again.

Right on cue, Zoe approached with carefully rehearsed hesitation. “Perhaps if you apologized to Daphne, as family, she might reconsider letting you stay.”

A dry laugh escaped Ophelia’s lips. “You know,” she remarked, her tone laced with irony, “for once Daphne and I agree on something.”

“What do you mean?” Zoe’s wide-eyed innocence was almost convincing.

Daphne leaned forward, a triumphant smirk playing on her lips. This was it, the moment Ophelia would finally eat humble pie.

Ophelia’s gaze swept over both women before landing squarely on Zoe. “You must be out of your mind.”

Someone in the classroom couldn’t suppress a snicker.
