Queen of Wild Cards novel Chapter 102

Frederick had no idea about the stunt his wife and daughter had pulled at the mall with Stella, so he looked at the screen skeptically. "Miranda, is this really his number?"

"Yes, why would I lie?" Miranda whispered back. "Chloe used this exact number to invite him to dinner last time. It's him."

Half-doubting, Frederick dialed the number.

Julius was in the middle of a video conference with overseas clients. Hearing his phone buzz, he glanced at the screen. Seeing an unknown number, he gestured for Sean Cahill to take it.

Sean picked up the phone and stepped out into the hallway.

Hearing the line connect, Frederick's eyes lit up. "Hello, Mr. Blackwood? This is Frederick Hawthorne."

He didn't dare use Julius's first name.

"I'm Mr. Blackwood's assistant," Sean answered politely. "He's in a meeting right now. Can I help you?"

Hearing it was the assistant, Frederick grew even more excited. This really was Julius's private line!

"Hello! I'm Frederick Hawthorne, your boss's father-in-law. I'm currently down in the lobby of your headquarters, and I'd like to see him. Could you please let him know?"

"Father-in-law? Our CEO isn't even married. What kind of scam call is this?"

Sean hung up immediately, staring at the screen as if he had misheard the guy.

Was this a joke? The boss was single. Where did a father-in-law come from?

Frederick stared at the disconnected call, refusing to give up, and dialed again.

Sean hadn't even stepped back into the office yet when the phone lit up with the same number. Rolling his eyes, he rejected the call.

If the phone wasn't locked, he would have blocked the number right then and there.

Watching the call get instantly declined, Frederick sighed. "He's not answering."

Miranda pulled up the number on her own phone. "Then let's try a different number. I'll do it."
