Queen of Wild Cards novel Chapter 26

"I don't want you feeding me," Nadine grumbled petulantly. "You can barely take care of yourself. If anyone is going to feed me, it should be my granddaughter-in-law."

Julius shot Stella a pleading look.

Stella had been wanting a chance to check the older woman's vitals anyway. She stepped up, taking Nadine's hand affectionately. "I'll feed you, don't worry." She discreetly felt her pulse before picking up the bowl of warm soup from Lisa.

Having Stella there seemed to lift Nadine's spirits, and she slowly finished the entire bowl.

"Alright, I've eaten," Nadine sighed. "You two go have your dinner. I'll be right as rain by morning."

The second the door clicked shut behind them, Nadine practically leaped out of bed, her frail demeanor vanishing instantly.

"Well? How was my performance?"

"Oscar-worthy," Lisa chuckled, helping her slip on her shoes. "You nearly had me fooled."

"Why didn't you bring up the marriage license while they were in here?" Lisa asked. "The timing felt perfect."

"You don't understand my grandson. He's far too sharp. If I push too hard, too fast, he'll get suspicious. Pack me an overnight bag. I'm going to the hospital tomorrow."

"Is a hospital stay really necessary for this charade?"

"Absolutely," Nadine said with a sly grin. "Trust me, I'll have a real granddaughter-in-law before the week is out."

"I'll go to the hospital and check on her for you," Stella offered.

"Thank you. Let me know the second you have an update."

Just as they finished speaking, Julius's phone buzzed with a video call from Nadine.

She was wearing a hospital gown, looking pale and thoroughly exhausted against the sterile pillows.

"Don't worry about me, you two," Nadine rasped weakly. "The doctor says I can come home in a few days."

"Please just rest and listen to the doctors," Julius said anxiously. "Chloe is coming by later to bring you some food."
