Queen of Wild Cards novel Chapter 40

He despised Frederick's spineless tactic of selling out his own daughter for corporate gain, and he felt a deep sense of sympathy for everything Stella had been put through.

Chloe let out another terrified shriek. "No! You can't take me! Mom, tell him! Tell Dad to give the money back!"

Miranda genuinely adored her youngest daughter. She clung to Frederick's arm, pleading, "Honey, let's just return the money to them. The company expansion can wait. We'll figure something else out, but you can't just hand Chloe over to die!"

Frederick viciously shoved her off. "Why the hell should I give it back?! They took one of my daughters—that's a fact! I'm not walking away from this completely empty-handed!"

Larry didn't yell. He didn't even raise his voice. He simply delivered the final blow with chilling calmness. "If that's your final answer, so be it. The boss already left instructions. You can keep the money."

"But by tomorrow morning, Hawthorne Corp will cease to exist. The Blackwood family will orchestrate a total, ruthless embargo against you—not just in the city, but nationwide. Think very carefully before you lock in your answer."

Larry delivered the most devastating threat with the casual tone of discussing the weather.

Frederick stumbled back, the blood draining from his face.

The Blackwood family wasn't just rich; they were the wealthiest dynasty in the country, possessing resources he couldn't even fathom. He had tried to call their bluff to keep the hundred million, but they were dead serious.

And those five luxury estates! They were worth tens of millions alone. Letting them go physically pained him.

But if the Blackwoods issued a nationwide embargo, he wouldn't survive the week.

No. His company might not be a titan, but it was his life's work. He couldn't let the Blackwoods crush it into dust over this.

To a financial leviathan like the Blackwoods, bankrupting his corporation would take less effort than swatting a fly.

He cursed Stella in his mind. She really was a useless country bumpkin. She must have crumbled the second they interrogated her.

And since when did the untouchable Blackwood family care so much about petty revenge?
