Frederick sneered. "What a joke. Since when do I need my daughter's permission to handle my own wife's belongings? People would laugh in my face if they heard that."
"If people heard about this, they'd just call you a shameless lowlife who sells off the only thing his dead wife left for her child. Your company must be going under if you're this desperate for cash."
Unable to out-argue her sharp tongue, Frederick decided to stop playing games. "So what if I sold it? What are you gonna do, sue me?"
"Oh, I won't sue you. Lawyers cost money, and as you know, I'm just a poor girl from the country. I'm here for two things today. One, hand over the money you made from selling my mother's necklace. Two, give me her ashes."
Miranda let out a mocking laugh. "Wow. You really are just a greedy little country bumpkin, aren't you?"
"I wasn't talking to the homewrecker. Shut your mouth!"
She hadn't even started on Miranda yet, but if the woman wanted a death wish, Stella was happy to oblige.
"Who are you calling a homewrecker? I am your stepmother! If a stepdaughter lacks basic manners, it's my duty to teach her a lesson. Guards! Grab her and lock her in the storage room!"
The butler and servants had already been standing by in the hallway. At Miranda's command, they all rushed in.
Stella looked at Frederick, her voice dangerously soft. "Is this what you want too?"
Hearing her tone drop, Frederick assumed she was scared and puffing out her chest. "You are completely out of control, Stella.
"You disrespect your stepmother and defy your own father. Spending some time locked up will do you good. Maybe it'll grind down that attitude and teach you how to respect your elders."
Stella felt a wave of profound disappointment. She shouldn't have expected anything different. He was like this when she was a child, and he hadn't changed a bit in ten years.
What a wonderful father.
Her voice grew even colder. "Frederick, keep the money. Just give me my mother's ashes, and I'll walk out of here and never step foot in this house again."
She had only demanded the auction money to piss him off.
