Max had appeared by my side without me noticing. “What did he say to make you so flustered?”
I grabbed his hand. “He said he’ll come back alive. Where are you sending him?”
I wanted to see what excuse he’d use to brush me off.
He just grunted in acknowledgment.
No explanation at all.
“When is Garrett leaving?”
“Tonight.”
He answered me seriously, and I simply nodded.
“Don’t even think about going with him. He’ll be fine. You’re staying here with me to wait for news.”
He had guessed.
No matter what I thought, he could always guess.
“Richard and Garrett are going to die, aren’t they?” I panicked. I thought I had forged a heart of steel, cold and indifferent. But I still worried about Richard.
“Garrett is bringing the most advanced weapons. He won’t let anything happen to Richard. If something does happen, well…”
“Are you trying to fool yourself or me?”
Max sighed deeply. “Let me take you out to clear your head.”
“Okay,” I said, feeling defeated.
He wouldn't tell me if I asked. That's just how people are.
“Claire, some things are better left unsaid,” he said, his grip on my shoulders tightening slightly.
I leaned against his shoulder, suppressing my emotions.
“Trust Garrett and Richard.”
“You don’t even believe that yourself. The situation is dire, isn’t it? Richard just recovered from a major illness. I don’t want him to die. I really don’t.”
As I broke down in tears, Max gently stroked my hair. “Then go with Garrett and see for yourself. That will put your mind at ease.”
