Garrett had chosen to transport the goods by sea, which would allow them to remain hidden and avoid any conflict with Babur’s high-profile convoy.
According to Max’s plan, Babur was a diversion, sent ahead to Bravenland with supplies to draw attention. The truly useful weapons were all on Garrett’s ship.
Helen and I stood at the highest point of the deck, gazing out at the vast ocean. It would take three days and two nights to reach Bravenland.
We were traveling under the guise of a fishing vessel.
So we were also dressed plainly.
“On this trip, both sides are facing a life-or-death situation,” Garrett said with a sigh. He had appeared behind me without a sound. “My brother is back at the castle, holding down an empty fort, and you genuinely don’t care about him at all.” Garrett’s words were laced with sarcasm, and they hit me right where it hurt.
“Talking like that won’t help matters. They can fight for their country, and Claire can fight for hers!” This time, Helen stood up for me, retorting sharply to Garrett.
Garrett sneered. “My brother sent you and me away so he could face the attacks from all the countries in Greywick alone. Didn't I take you to see that meeting between the ministers and my brother? The neighboring countries are getting restless. Now he sends me to Bravenland with you, and Babur is out of the picture too. Isn't it obvious he's trying to get everyone out of the way? Claire Floyd, I really don't know why my brother always puts you first.”
Frustrated, Garrett threw whatever was in his hand into the sea.
“Garrett, don't say things like that. You’ll give Claire the wrong idea,” Helen said anxiously, tugging at my sleeve. “Don’t listen to him. Mr. Hilton has everything planned out. He’ll be fine. As long as you and Bravenland are safe, the other countries won’t have any leverage against him.”
“Mm,” I replied coldly. I looked out at the sea in the quiet of the night. It was calm on the surface but held a turbulent power within.
“Claire, really, don’t take it to heart. Garrett is just worried about his brother. He’s very protective of him.”
Seeing my low spirits, Helen continued to comfort me.
“Helen, I’m fine. You should go get some rest.”
I was already here. There was no turning back.
