Elena’s POV

I hesitated, looking up at the sky. The clouds had thickened since my arrival, bringing with them a frigid wind that whipped through the pines and the kind of hush that only came from impending snow.

But riding in the car with Kade? It wasn’t exactly something that filled me with joy. Especially not after that strange, cryptic comment he’d just made.

“Let’s go!” Ivy said, tugging on my hand. She yanked me toward Kade’s car, which was parked on the street. “I wanna sit in the front, though!”

Well, it seemed the decision had been made for me. Kade was already unlocking the car and opened the door for me. Ivy jumped in first, but at a disapproving look from Kade, she groaned and clambered into the backseat. She buckled herself into her carseat and huffed, folding her arms.

“I hate sitting in the baby seat,” she grumbled.

Kade shook his head at her. “You are still a baby.”

“Nuh-uh! I’m all grown up!”

It was hard not to laugh despite everything. The kid had inherited someone’s humor, which definitely didn’t come from Serena. Unless Kade had a secret funny streak that I didn’t know about, I wasn’t sure who she got it from.

After hesitating for another moment, I finally relented, if only because a cold wind whipped past me that made my ears sting. I jumped into the passenger seat, and Kade shut the door for me before circling around to the driver’s side.

He didn’t speak as he put the car in drive and pulled away. I waved at Harrison, whose head was still poking out of his front door. His neighbor came out, though, and he quickly disappeared before she could run over and start berating him.

“I liked him,” Ivy said, swinging her legs. “He’s nice.”

Kade didn’t comment on that.

“Can you turn the radio on?” Ivy asked. Kade nodded to me, and I pressed the button. A staticky station came on that was playing some old rock and roll songs.

Ivy made a gagging sound. “Yuck! I like the other station better. The one that plays the fun songs.”

“I don’t know what that means,” Kade pointed out. “Besides, there aren’t any other stations available around here.”
