“Just a coffee, thanks.”
Kade arched a brow. “You need to eat.”
“I’m fine.”
“It’s okay, Daddy. I’ll share my grilled cheese. But only one french fry, ‘cuz those are my favorite.”
When our food came, she immediately handed me half of her sandwich. I opened my mouth to decline, but dammit… The way she was looking up at me, smiling like I was wearing the sun on my head, made my resolve soften. She was a sweet girl, even if her parents weren’t. I couldn’t fault her for her breeding.
“Thanks.” I took the sandwich and bit into it. The bread was soft with a slight crisp, and the cheese was gooey and melty.
Ivy watched me carefully and bit the corner of hers just like I had with mine, like it was some kind of epiphany to eat a diagonal-cut sandwich from the corner instead of the center.
Kade looked up at me as he cut his steak. “So,” he said, “you and Tyler. Brother and sister.” He popped a piece into his mouth without breaking eye contact. “I thought you grew up as a rogue.”
“I did.” This was a story I’d told a few times in the past seven years. It was the type of story few people ever asked for details about. I shrugged. “I don’t remember much from my childhood. All I know is that I was lost at birth.”
He chewed and swallowed slowly. “Huh. I’m surprised I never heard anything about a search. A missing daughter of an Alpha is a big deal.”
“I’m sure you were very young.”
“You really don’t remember anything?” he asked. “Who took you in?”
“A family of rogues.”
“I see. Whatever happened to them?”
This was where people usually stopped asking questions. I hesitated for a moment, and the look that flashed through Kade’s eyes indicated that I’d given him the answer he was looking for.
“They died,” I said quickly.
“Died? How old were you?”
“Old enough to miss them.”
“Funny. You never mention them.”
I frowned. “People don’t usually want to hear about rogues.”
Kade shrugged. “I do.”
