All three of them turned to look at me with expressions of surprise, vindication and guilt.

Xenois stood up from his chair beside Sophia’s bed, his face pale as he realized that I was actually in front of him and I had heard everything that had

been said in here.

Lumina, he started, but I cut him off.

‘Don’t you dare ‘Lumina’ me!” I shouted, my hands shaking with rage as I continued speaking, feeling my eyes burn with unshed tears.

‘I heard everything! Riley is your son? When did this happen? When did you cheat on me with her?”

‘I can explain- Xenois began, but I was done listening to his made up explanations any longer. His carefully thought out lies, I wasn’t going to buy it

anymore.

“Explain what? How you’ve been lying to me? How you’ve been keeping this secret from me, while I’ve been caring for your illegitimate child in our

home?”

Sophia shifted in her hospital bed, and I noticed for the first time how battered she looked. Her arm was in a sling, her face was bruised, and there were

bandages visible on her arms.

“Lumina,” she said softly, her voice weak and apologetic as she blinked a lot as if she was trying to stop herself from crying.

‘I’m so sorry. I never wanted anyone to know. I was going to keep it a secret forever. I didn’t want anyone to find out about this at all. It is my shameful mess alone. I didn’t want to wreck your marriage.”

Her words, spoken with such false sincerity to act like she was the victim here, only made me angrier.

‘Don’t you dare apologize to me like you’re the victim here!”

‘She’s not the one who’s wrong here,” Silvia interrupted coldly crossing her hands across her chest as she looked at me with disdain present in her features. “You are. You tried to have her killed, just like you killed my daughter Xena five years ago. But this time, you were caught red-handed.”

I felt the world tilt around me as I was taken aback by what I heard. Xena’s death was always blamed on me no matter what I did, and I had gotten used

to it. But what the hell did she mean by Sophia attempted murder?

“What? What are you talking about? I had nothing to do with whatever happened to Sophia, and I certainly didn’t kill Xena!”

“The men who attacked Sophia confessed,so you can drop the fake act now.” ilvia continued, her voice filled with disgust.

“They said you paid them to hurt her and burn down her house. You’re nothing but a murderer, and this time you won’t get away with it.”

‘I don’t know what you’re talking about!” I screamed, feeling desperate and cornered as I felt the need to explain myself. “I would never hurt anyone!”

“Choose,” Silvia said, turning to her son instead having decided not to pay many more attention.

‘Choose between this monster and the mother of your child, Choose between the woman who’s been trying to destroy your family with her evil

diabolical ways and the woman who gave you a son.”

Xenois looked torn at the moment, his eyes moving between me and Sophias he shook his head.

“Mother, I have been telling you this all along. Lumina wouldn’t do something like this. She’s not vindictive.”

“Isn’t she?” Sophia said quietly from her bed, her voice getting louder although she kept her eyes on the bed trying to be seen as innocent.

“Xenois, you’ve seen how she’s treated me. She burned my hand on the stove a month ago. She threw hot coffee at me at the restaurant. She slapped me

in front of our son’s school. She’s been escalating her attacks on me for months.”

I watched in horror as Xenois’s expression began to change, as he was beginning to look doubtful as he looked at me.

“Lumina,” he said slowly, hesitating as he asked

“Did you have anything to do with what happened to Sophia?”

The question hit me like a physical blow. My own husband was doubting me, believing their lies over my word.
