Chapter 108

I climbed the stairs to our bedroom with dread pooling in my stomach, each tep I took felt like I was walking away from the life I’d built over the past
five years.
The familiar creak of the third step, the family photos that were lined on the walls, the scent of the lavender candles I always kept burning, everything felt like it belonged to someone else now.
In our bedroom, I went straight to the closet and pushed aside the hanging clothes to reveal a small safe that had been hidden behind my winter coats
and wears.
My hands shook as I entered the combination, it was Ollie’s birthday, the one date I knew I’d never forget.
Inside were the things I’d been quietly gathering for months, knowing that a day like this might come, especially with the fact that I had been reborn.
It was where I had kept my passport, birth certificate, the emergency credit card I’d opened in my maiden name, and the cash I’d been slowly
withdrawing from our joint account.
Three hundred thousand dollars. Not enough to start a new life with Ollie, but it was enough to disappear for a while and remain afloat until I figure
out my next plans.
I’d started preparing for this possibility after the boys first play date incident when I’d realized that Sophia wasn’t going to give up her pursuit of my
husband.
Some part of me had known even then that this day might come, that I might need to choose between my dignity and my marriage.
I grabbed a small suitcase from the top shelf and began throwing clothes into it – jeans, sweaters, underwear, a few nice outfits in case I needed to look
professional.
My hands moved automatically while my mind was racing, filled with different thoughts. Where would we go? How long could I stay hidden that Xenois
wouldn’t find me? What would I tell Ollie?
The sound of children laughing from down the hall made me pause in what was doing. I could hear Ollie’s voice mixed with Riley’s, and for a moment,
the fact that it was so normal despite in a situation like this broke my resolve and almost made me change my mind.
Those two boys had no idea that their world was about to change forever.
I finished packing my essentials and made my way to Ollie’s room. The door was open ajar, and I could see both boys sitting on the floor with Ollie’s
tablet between them, watching something that was making them giggle.
“And then the dinosaur goes ‘ROAR!” Ollie was saying, making exaggerated gestures with his hands.
Riley smiled a real smile, not the subdued expression he’d been wearing sie yesterday. “That’s funny,” he said quietly. “I wish I had a tablet like this.”
“You can play with mine whenever you want,” Ollie said generously, beaming at him happily. “We’re like brothers now!”
The innocent words hit me like a physical blow, Brothers. If only he knew he right he was,
I pushed open the door and stepped into the room, trying to keep my expression neutral, so as to not alarm my child or Xenois son at the moment.
“Hey, boys. Having fun?”

“Mommy!” Ollie jumped up and ran to me. Riley was telling me about his fabrite dinosaur. Did you know that T-Rex had really tiny arms but they were
super strong?”
“I didn’t know that,” I said, forcing a smile on my face as I gently ruffled his hair. “That’s very interesting.”
I moved to Ollie’s dresser and began pulling out clothes, searching for the ones he was going to take with him- his favorite jeans, the superhero t-shirts
he loved, warm pajamas, enough underwear and socks for a week. Both boys watched me with curiosity scribbled on their faces.
“What are you doing, Mommy?” Ollie asked.
“Just organizing,’ I said, grabbing his small dinosaur backpack from the close. “We might be going on a little trip.”
‘A trip?” Ollie’s eyes lit up with excitement, hearing those words.
“Where are we going? Is it to the beach? Can we see real dinosaurs?”
“We’ll see,” I said, trying to keep my voice light as I packed his tablet, charge, and his collection of small dinosaur toys. I grabbed his favorite stuffed animal a worn T-Rex he’d named Chomper alongside Tricy, the dinosaur he had been with when he met his demise with that accident in my previous life-
and tucked it into the ‘ag.
Riley had gone quiet again, watching me with those green eyes that missed thing. There was something that looked like he understood more than a
five-year-old should.
Are you going away?” he asked softly.
I paused in my packing, looking at this child who shared my son’s father.
Despite everything, despite the circumstances, that led to his birth, he was just a little boy. A little boy who’d been hurt and hospitalized and whose
mother had abandoned him.
“Maybe for a while,” I said honestly.
“Because of me?” Riley’s voice was low and I could barely hear him, as I shook my head.
The question broke something inside me. “Oh, sweetheart, no. This isn’t because of you. You haven’t done anything wrong.”
But even as I said the words, I knew they weren’t entirely true and I was trying to not make him feel guilty.
Riley’s existence was the catalyst for everything that had happened. His DNA test had forced the truth into the open, and had made to continue pretending that my marriage was something that could be saved.
impossible for me
I finished packing Ollie’s things and turned to face him. He was looking confused now, picking up on the tension he couldn’t quite understand.
“Mommy, what’s happening?’ he asked, his voice small.
I knelt down to his height, taking his small hands in mine as I gave him a small smile.
“We’re going to go on a little trip with a friend of Mommy’s,” I said carefully. It’ll be fun, like an adventure,”
“What kind of adventure?” Ollie asked, his eyes filled with both curiosity and worry.
“The kind where we get to see new places and maybe eat ice cream for breakfast,” I said, trying to sound excited so he would feel a lot more relieved than tensed up.

Chapter 108
‘Can Riley come too?” Ollie asked, looking at his friend hopefully.
I felt my heart clench at his words as I shook my head. “No, sweetheart. Rile needs to stay here and wait for his mommy.”
“But what if she doesn’t come back?” Ollie asked innocently.
‘She will,” I said firmly, though I had my doubts about that.
“And Uncle Thorne will take good care of him until she does.”
