I stood up and took Ollie’s hand, slinging his backpack over my shoulder as said to him. “Come on, let’s go downstairs.”

Riley followed us silently, not saying anything although I could feel his eyes on me, and I fought the urge not to look back as, his small footsteps were echoing in the hallway.

When we got to the living room, I could hear raised voices – Thorne and Zage in the middle of a heated argument.

-completely irresponsible,” Thorne was saying as I got closer to make out the words that were being said. “You’re helping her make the biggest mistake of her life.”

back.

“I’m helping her escape a toxic situation, Zade replied calmly, refusing to budge on this matter as he crossed his arms across his chest.

‘Something you should be doing instead of enabling your Alpha’s destructive behavior.”

“Destructive behavior?” Thorne’s voice rose as he gritted his teeth and clenched his fist, taking two steps closer towards him.

“He’s trying to navigate an impossible situation. He just found out he has a son he didn’t know existed.”

“And instead of being honest with his wife about it, he kept it secret and chose to defend the woman who’s been destroying their marriage,” Zade shot

Both men turned when they heard us coming down the stairs. Thorne’s face was flushed red with anger and frustration, while Zade looked composed but tense at the same time as he was clenching and unclenching his fists.

“Lumina,” Thorne said, his voice pleading as he sighted the bags that I was holding. “Please reconsider this. Think about what you’re doing to your

family.”

I adjusted Ollie’s backpack on my shoulder and looked at Thorne steadily, not showing him any signs of backing down from this so he could see that I was being serious. “I have thought about it. This is the right choice for us.”

‘Say goodbye to Uncle Thorne, Ollie,” I said gently, nudging Ollie.

Ollie looked confused but obediently went to Thorne and hugged his legs. “Be, Uncle Thorne. We’re going on an adventure!”

Thorne’s face fell slightly as he hugged Ollie back, tightly as he said. “Be good for your mommy, okay? And remember that your daddy loves you very

much.”

“I will,” Ollie said cheerfully, completely oblivious to what was actually happening here.

Zade took our bags from me and headed toward the door. “I’ll put these in the car,” he said quietly.

As we prepared to leave, Ollie suddenly looked around with worry like he was realizing something before he asked. “Mommy, where’s Daddy? Isn’t he

coming too?”

I knelt down again, my heart breaking at the hope in his voice as I shook my head. “Not this time, sweetheart. This is a special trip for just you and me.”

“But what about Daddy?” Ollie’s lower lip began to tremble as he blinked back the tears that were swelling up in his eyes. “We need to wait for him.”

“This is going to be a secret adventure,” I said, trying to make it sound exciting rather than devastating to him.

Chapter 109

“Just for us. We’ll tell Daddy about it later.”

“A secret?” Ollie’s eyes widened with curiosity as he was, momentarily distracted from his worry.

“That’s right,” I said, forcing a smile. A secret adventure.”

I stood up and took his hand, leading him toward the door where Zade was whiting by his car. As we walked across the threshold, I felt like I was

crossing a bridge I could never return to.

“Mommy,” Ollie said as I buckled him into the backseat, “will we see Daddy son?”

“I don’t know, baby,” I said honestly, my voice filled with emotion. “But I promise everything will be okay.”

As I closed the car door and walked around to the passenger side, I almost collided with Riley. He’d been standing there silently, watching us prepare to

leave.

He held out a small piece of paper to me, folded carefully in his small hands hesitated, not sure I wanted to know what it said, but finally took it.

“Take care of yourself, Riley,” I said softly, surprised by how much I meant it. Despite everything that happened. He didn’t deserve my hatred.

He nodded solemnly, and I had the strangest feeling that he understood far more than he should.

I got into the passenger seat, and Zade started the car. As we pulled out of the driveway, I saw Thorne standing in the doorway with Riley beside him,

both of them watching us leave.

“Mommy, look!” Ollie said from the backseat, pointing at the house. “Riley’s waving!”

I turned to see the small boy raising his hand in a goodbye gesture. I waved back, feeling tears threatening to spill again.

As we drove through the neighborhood I’d called home for five years, I finally unfolded the piece of paper Riley had given me. In careful, childish handwriting, were three simple words:

I’m sorry.

The words blurred as tears filled my eyes. What did a five-year-old have to be sorry for? For existing? For the pain his presence had caused?

“What is it?” Zade asked quietly, noticing my reaction as he looked worried a me

I showed him the paper, and his jaw clenched as he shook his head. “That kid shouldn’t have to apologize for his father’s mistakes.”

“He shouldn’t,” I agreed, folding the paper carefully and putting it in my purse, I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away. I shook my head as I looked at

Zade and added. “None of this is his fault.”

“Where are we going?” Ollie asked from the backseat, his voice drowsy from the motion of the car. He was rubbing his eyes, trying to remain awake as

he looked at me.

“Somewhere safe,” I said, reaching back to squeeze his hand gently as I smile back at him and said. “Somewhere we can figure out what comes next.”

“That sounds vague” He muttered underneath his breath but my response was only another squeeze of his hands.
