Chapter 118
LUMINA
“There are a few options,” Dr. Reeves said carefully, glancing at Lynn who nodded her head for her to speak as she faced me.
“The most effective treatment would be to have his father’s scent nearby – something that carries his scent with him, for him to
familiarize himself with. But given the circumstances…”
“That’s not possible,” I said firmly, shaking my head. I wasn’t going to budge on this. “There has to be another way.”

Dr. Reeves nodded understandingly, as she continued speaking”We can do our best and try to stabilize him medically. I can put him
under light anesthesia and administer some drugs suitable for him that will help to regulate his system and bring down the fever. It’s not
ideal, but it should help his body process what’s happening.”
“Will it hurt him?” I asked, my maternal instinct rejecting at the thought of putting my baby under anesthesia.
“There are always risks,” Dr. Reeves admitted, looking a bit worried as she added “But given his current state and what he is currently
going through, the risks of not treating him are greater than the risks of using artificial drugs to get his body under control. His body is
essentially fighting itself right now.”
I looked down at Ollie, who was still mumbling for his father in his fevered state. His small face was flushed with heat, and his
breathing remained shallow and rapid.
him.”
“Okay,” I said finally, my voice breaking batting away tears that sprung up in my eyes as I said. “Do whatever you need to do to help
Dr. Reeves began preparing her supplies, and Lynn moved to stand beside me, offering silent support as she placed a hand on my
shoulder rubbing it gently as I drew strength from it.
‘Mrs. Blackwood,” Dr. Reeves said as she worked, “I need to ask you a personal question. Have you rejected your mate’s bond with
Alpha Xenois?”
I felt my cheeks burn with embarrassment, hearing this kind of intimate question from her.
“No,” I said quietly. “I haven’t rejected the bond. I just… I left his territory without his permission.”
Dr. Reeves paused in her preparations, exchanging a meaningful look with Lynn. “I see. And you’re feeling the effects of that
separation?”
I nodded, suddenly aware of the hollow ache in my chest that had been growing steadily since we’d crossed the border. It felt like I had been ripped into two, but it seemed like something was blocking me from feeling the whole pain. Maybe it was because it was my choice to leave so the hurt wasn’t as big as it was when being the one left behind.

“That means Alpha Xenois is experiencing the same thing,” Dr. Reeves said gently. “The forced separation from a mate, especially when children are involved, can cause a lot of physical and emotional distress for both parties.”
“What kind of distress?” I asked, though I wasn’t sure I wanted to know the answer.
29
“Anxiety, insomnia, loss of appetite, difficulty concentrating,” Dr. Reeves listed, with her fingers.
“In severe cases, if the separation continues for a long period of time, it can lead to more serious issues that might not be reversible.”
“Like what?” I whispered.
“Body health decline, severe depression, and in extreme cases…” Dr. Reeves paused. “In extreme cases, it can be fatal.”
I felt the blood drain from my face as my eyes widened in fear. “Fatal?”
“Don’t panic,” Lynn said quickly, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder.
“It would take months of complete separation for it to reach that point, it’s not something that happens at once. And there are ways
to manage the symptoms.”
“But he’s already going through so much,” I said, thinking of the pain I’d seen in Xenois’s eyes as we’d driven away.
“With everything that’s happened, with the accusations and the investigation…”
“The bond between mates is strong,” Dr. Reeves said as she prepared the sedative for Ollie. “It’s designed to keep couples together through difficult times. Fighting against it is… challenging for both parties.”
I sank into the chair beside Ollie’s bed, feeling the weight of my decision pressing down on me. I’d thought I was doing the right thing, protecting myself and my son from a toxic situation. I finally got what I wanted. My freedom after six years of being tied down to that place, not sure if I would ever leave it. But what if I was actually making everything worse?
“I can’t go back,” I said quietly, more to myself than to anyone else. “I can’t go back to that house and pretend everything is fine when his ex-girlfriend is living there and his mother hates me and he doesn’t trust me enough to believe I’m innocent.”
“You don’t have to make any decisions right now,” Lynn said gently, holding my hand in hers as she added. “Let’s focus on getting Ollie healthy first. Everything else can wait, we need to focus on what’s important now. I’m sure Xenois will not get worse just from a
little separation.”
Dr. Reeves approached the bed with a small syringe. “This will help him sleep and allow his body to get better gradually,” she explained. “He should wake up feeling much better.”
I held Ollie’s hand as she slowly injected the syringe in his arm, watching as his restless movements gradually stopped and his
breathing returned back to normal.

Chapter 118
The fever seemed to break almost immediately and the heat was beginning to subside.
‘How long will he sleep?” I asked.
“Several hours,” Dr. Reeves replied. “His body needs time to rest. When he wakes up, he should be much more comfortable.”

As the doctor packed up her supplies, I remained beside Ollie’s bed, holding his small hand and watching the peaceful rise and fall of
his chest. For the first time since we’d left home, he looked comfortable.
“Mrs. Blackwood,” Dr. Reeves said softly, “I know this is a difficult situation, but I want you to know what you’re experiencing – the doubt, the guilt, the physical discomfort – it’s all normal. The mate bond is powerful, and it doesn’t simply disappear because of
relationship problems.”
“I know,” I whispered. “I can feel it. This constant ache, like something is missing.”
“That will continue until the situation is resolved,” she said gently. “Either you both reconcile or you reject him as your mate forever.
There is no middle ground.”
