Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 123

Chapter 123

SOPHIA

The humiliation burned through me like it was acid that was thrown on my skin as I held on tightly to the steering wheel. My knuckles were white from the force of my anger. Every word Xenois had spoken in that hospital room kept on echoing in my head, hurting my pride.

“What kind of mother abandons her child to play nursemaid to an unconscious man?”

The accusation stung because it was the truth, that he clearly spoke to make me realize what I was doing. But he didn’t understand. He couldn’t see that everything I’d done had been for us, for our future together. I’d sat by his bedside for three days, barely eating or sleeping, proving my devotion while his precious Lumina had run off with another Alpha. I had been the one who was worried sick and kept on praying he would survive even after the doctor told me the reason for his illness. A heart attack? What an irony? Xenois was so terrified of his mate leaving that he suffered a heart attack? I swallowed the insult as I could imagine what the doctor was thinking and how amusing it was but I preserved. I held on, hoping that he would wake up and see that I was the one that was there for him.

And this was how he repaid me? By treating me like I was diseased, like my very presence disgusted him that much?

I pulled into the driveway of his house our house, I corrected myself, it wasn’t formal yet but I was going to make sure it was

sat in the car for a moment, trying to compose myself, I took a deep breath and exhaled trying to settle the thoughts that were running amok in my head. The afternoon sun was out, casting shadows on the well tended lawn, and I could see Ollie’s toys that Riley had been borrowing to keep himself busy from boredom scattered across the porch from where he’d been playing earlier.

The sight of those toys sent another wave of frustration through me as I gripped on tight to the steering wheel, hearing the fabric rip

a bit.

Even in his anger, even when he was heartbroken over his missing family, Xenois’s first concern had been for Riley. Not for me, not

for the woman who’d stood by him through everything, but for the child.

It had alwayss been about the children with him. First Ollie, now Riley. When would it be about me?

I climbed out of the car and walked toward the house, my heels making a noise as I walked on the stone pathway. The front door was

unlocked, as I pushed it open and stepped inside.

“Riley?” I called out as I entered the foyer. “Where are you, sweetheart?”

‘In here!’ came his cheerful voice from the living room.

I found him sprawled on the carpet, surrounded by building blocks and toy cars. He looked up at me with those bright green eyes much like his father’s – and smiled widely.

“Mommy! You’re back! Is Mr Xenois feeling better?”

– SO

The innocent question made my chest tight with something that I could not identify at the moment.

“He’s… he’s going to be fine, baby. He needs to rest for a while longer.”

“When is he coming home?” Riley asked, abandoning his toys to come over and wrap his arms around my legs. “I made him a picture

to make him feel better.”

I looked down at this beautiful child who called me mommy, who trusted me completely. And yet, looking at him now, all I could

think about was how he stood between me and everything I wanted.

“That’s very sweet, honey,” I said, gently pulling myself from his embrace.

“Why don’t you go play in your room for a while? Mommy needs to make some phone calls.”

“Okay!” Riley said nodding his head as he went up to gather the cars that he was using.. “Can we make cookies later? For Mr Xenois?

To thank him for letting us stay in his house until we find a new one?”
