Chapter 134
XENOIS
22
I stared at the long pile of pack reports that had piled up on my desk during the days that I haven’t been at work but in the hospital, and all the words seemed to be blurring together as I tried to focus on anything other than the empty silence that was a constant fixture
in my office these days.
The hospital had released me this morning despite their insistence that I stay and recuperate more, but I couldn’t bear the thought of staying in that room and keep thinking about my family or going home to that house where every room held memories of Lumina and
Ollie.
“You should be resting,” Thorne said from his chair that was across my desk, his voice filled with concern that he had been showing
since he picked me up from the hospital.
“The doctors said you need to take it easy for at least a week.”
“I can’t rest,” I replied, not looking up from the reports I wasn’t actually reading, but trying to make myself look busy just for show.
“Not when they’re out there, in another Alpha’s territory, probably thinking I don’t care about them.”
“And you think burying yourself in paperwork is going to help?” Thorne asked critically and I could feel his eyebrows raised even
without me looking.
I finally looked at him, seeing the worry that had been present on his face.
Thorne had been my Second for years, but more than that, he was my friend.
He’d watched me fall in love with Lumina, had stood by my side when Ollie was born, and now he was watching me fall apart.
‘I can’t go home, Thorne,” I confessed, my voice sounding so low that I wasn’t sure I could hear myself.
“The house is too quiet. Ollie’s toys are still scattered around the living room. Lumina’s scent still lingers in our bedroom. It’s
torture.”
‘What about Riley?” Thorne asked gently. “He’s been asking for you. He doesn’t understand where you’ve been.”
The mention of Riley sent guilt running down my chest.
I’d been avoiding thinking about him, avoiding the confusion and questions that surrounded his existence in my life. It was a mystery that I still wasn’t able to piece together despite the number of DNA tests that I had Thorne take in all 43 hospitals in this city.
“Riley is better off with his mother. He doesn’t even know I’m supposed to be his father, so he won’t feel abandoned.”

Chapter 134
‘Xenois-
:
‘I need time,” I cut him off shaking my head. Sure I was selfish but I didn’t care right now.
“I need to figure out how to get my real family back before I can deal with anything else.”

Thorne nodded, understanding in his eyes, but I could see he disagreed with the way that I was neglecting Riley. Riley was Ollie’s age.
He was feeling abandoned in his own way even if he had no idea what was truly going on.
Still, he didn’t push me on this, and we settled into a tense silence as I pretended to work and he handled the calls and
correspondence that kept piling up.
The quiet was suddenly shattered when my office door burst open without so much as a knock. My mother, Silvia, made her way
inside with a fury that had characterized her personality for as long as I could remember.
“Xenois Cardia Blackwood,” she snapped, using my full name like I was still a child being scolded.
“What in the Moon Goddess’s name is going on? I’ve been hearing the most ridiculous rumors about Lumina stealing Ollie and fleeing
the territory like some common criminal.”
I felt my jaw clench at her words. “Mother, you need to calm down.”
“Calm down?” She moved to stand directly in front of my desk, her hands planted firmly on the polished wood surface.
“My grandson has been kidnapped by his own mother, taken to another Alpha’s territory without permission, and you’re telling me to
calm down?”
“Lumina didn’t kidnap anyone,” I said, my voice sounding low as I continued speaking.
‘She left because this environment was toxic for her. She took our son to protect him.”
