Chapter 148
“Xenois,” Thorne had said slowly, like he was talking to a child who he was worried about,

“yesterday you were talking about how grateful you were that Sophia was taking care of Riley and helping manage the household. You
said she was providing stability during a difficult time.”
Had I said that? The words sounded foreign to me now, like something someone else might have said while wearing my face.
“I was confused,” I admitted instead, shrugging my shoulders as I added.
“I think I’ve been confused about a lot of things lately. But today my head feels clearer than it has in months.”
Thorne had reached across the desk and pressed the back of his hand to my forehead, checking for fever like I was a child.
I laughed and pushed his hand away, shaking my head in disbelief at his actions.
“I’m not sick, Thorne. I’m finally thinking straight.”
“That’s what worries me,” he’d muttered, but there had been relief in his expression too.
“So what’s the plan? You’re just going to tell Sophia to pack up and leave?”
“I’m going to be helpful but diplomatic about it,” I said. “I’ll help her get settled somewhere else, far away from my home but not too far away for people to think something is wrong, I would also, make sure Riley feels secure about the transition. But yes, essentially, that’s
exactly what I’m going to do.”
“And Riley?”
‘Riley can stay with me if he wants to,” I’d said, surprised by how naturally the decision had come. Despite all negativity and hatred that I had felt about the situation being unfair for me, Riley was still my biological son and that wasn’t going to change.
“He’s been through enough upheaval. If he’s comfortable here, there’s no reason to disrupt his life further.”
Thorne had studied my face carefully, “You’re talking about him like he’s actually your son.”
‘He is my son,” I said firmly. “Sophia being his mum doesn’t’t change that. He’s been part of this family for months now, and I care
about him.”
“What about Ollie?”
The question had hit me like a physical blow, “What about him?”

Chapter 148
“Your actual son,” Thorne had pressed. “The one who’s been missing you so much that Lumina had to leave town because she was worried about the fact that you might not love them anymore.”
I felt guilty immediately hearing this from him.
How had I allowed myself to become so distracted, so turned around, that I’d nearly forgotten about the pain my real son was
experiencing?
“I need to call Lumina,” I’d said suddenly, thinking about this.
“I need to talk to both of them.”
“No,” Thorne had said immediately. “You know Zade won’t let you speak to them directly, and if you try to go around him, you’ll just
make the situation worse.”
“Then what am I supposed to do?” I’d asked, frustration building in my chest. “Just sit here and hope they eventually come home on
their own?”
“Figure out what changed,” Thorne had said. “Figure out why you’re suddenly thinking clearly when you’ve been walking around In a fog for months. Because until you understand what was wrong, you can’t guarantee it won’t happen again.”

the simple chain with its small pendant that I’d worn faithfully since before my mating That’s when I’d reached for my necklace ceremony with Lumina. It was a nervous habit I’d developed over the years, touching the familiar weight in my hands when I was going through a mild crisis, unable to make a decision.
But my fingers had found only bare skin.
“What?” I’d said, looking down at my chest in confusion. “Where’s my necklace?”
‘What necklace?” Thorne had asked.
Panic had started to build in my chest as I’d patted down my shirt, checking to see if the chain had somehow slipped inside my clothes. “My necklace. The one Lumina gave me before our mating ceremony. I never take it off.”
