Chapter 149
I’d started searching frantically through my desk drawers, pushing files aside as I looked for the necklace.

I then dropped to my knees to look under the furniture to check if it has fallen somewhere. The necklace had to be here somewhere,
that had to be a must. I couldn’t have lost it. It was the most precious thing I owned, the last tangible connection I had to my mate.
“Xenois, Thorne had said, kneeling down to help me search. “Where did you last see it?”
‘I never took it off,” I’d repeated, my voice getting more desperate as our search turned up nothing. I ran a hand through my hair
trying not to panic.
“It’s been around my neck every day for years. Lumina gave it to me and I’ve been cherishing it all this time. It’s the only thing I have
left of her now.”
Thorne had stopped searching and stared at me with an expression I couldn’t interpret. “Are you kidding me right now?”
“What do you mean?” I’d asked, still crawling around on the floor looking for any glint of silver that might be a sign of the necklace.
“Lumina was furious about that necklace, Thorne said slowly narrowing his eyes at me as he continued speaking.
“Months ago, when we were discussing your… behavior changes… she specifically mentioned how much she hated seeing you wear it
because Sophia had given it to you.”
The words had hit me like a physical blow as I looked at him confusion and “That’s impossible. The necklace was from Lumina, days before our mating ceremony, it came in a box and a note attached to it. She said it would help me remember how much she loved me.”
But even as I’d said the words, doubt had started creeping in. The memory felt strange suddenly, like trying to grasp water with my
bare hands.
Thorne had sat back on his heels, watching me with growing concern. “Xenois, I don’t think Lumina gave you that necklace at all. That was one of the things that she hated, but wasn’t bold enough to tell you to remove it because you had been in contact with Sophia since, even before Lumina gave birth to Ollie.”
“No,” I’d said firmly, but my voice had sounded uncertain even to my own ears. “That’s not right. It was from Lumina, I’m certain of it. The note said Lumina and I figured she wasn’t sure if I would accept it if she gave it to me herself and I never took it off even when things were tense between us. It was my silent way of telling her that I wasn’t giving up on her no matter what and she never told me to my face that she hated the necklace. I remember holding it at dinner last night, and when I went to read Riley a bedtime story…”
The memory of the previous evening had come back in pieces. Reading to Riley, the boy’s arms around my neck, the warmth of the moment as we’d shared that quiet time together. Had the necklace been there then? I couldn’t remember feeling its familiar weight during
the hug.
“Maybe it fell at home, I’d said, grabbing my car keys from the desk. “I need to go look for it.”

Chapter 149
That’s when my phone started ringing. Sophia’s name had appeared on the display, and normally I would have answered immediately,
eager for any news about Riley or any excuse to hear a friendly voice. But today, looking at her name had filled me with an inexplicable
sense of dread.
I’d almost let it go to voicemail, but something had made me answer at the last second.
“Hello?”
But instead of Sophia’s voice, I’d heard Riley’s small, terrified cry coming through the speaker.
“Mr. Xenois! Mr. Xenois, please help us!” His voice had been high with panic, breathless like he was running. There are rogues chasing us! They’re trying to hurt Mommy and me!”
My blood had turned to ice as I’d heard growling in the background, the sound of breaking branches, and Riley’s sobbing breaths as he’d apparently been running through the forest.
“Riley, where are you?” I shouted into the phone, already moving toward the door. “Tell me where you are and I’ll come get you!”
“I don’t know!” he cried. “We went for a drive and now we’re lost and they’re chasing us and Mommy told me to call you and—”
A scream had cut through his words – high and terrified and distinctly feminine. Sophia’s voice, filled with pain and fear.
Then the line had gone dead.
“Riley!” I shouted into the silent phone. “Riley, can you hear me?”
Nothing.
I’d immediately tried calling back, but the call had gone straight to voicemail. My hands had been shaking as I’d grabbed my jacket, my mind racing through possibilities and scenarios, all of them bad.
“What’s happening?” Thorne had asked, seeing my panic.
“Rogues, I’d said shortly. “They’re attacking Sophia and Riley. I have to-
My phone had rung again, cutting off my words. This time, Lumina’s name had appeared on the display – her personal number, not the pack line I’d been calling to try to reach her.
For a split second, relief had flooded through me. Finally, she was calling me directly. Finally, we could talk and start working through
our problems.
But when I’d answered, her voice had been tight with panic.
“Xenois, something’s wrong with Ollie,’ she’d said without wasting time. He just started screaming and now he’s unconscious and I

Lumina, this is a bad time, I’d interrupted, torn between my worry for Riley and my desperate need to help her. “Something’s
happened to Riley. Rogues are attacking them and I need to-

‘No, you don’t understand,” Lumina had cut me off, her voice rising with desperation. “Ollie was fine one minute and then he just collapsed. He’s not responding to anything and I think something terrible is happening to him.”
“Get him to a hospital, I’d told Lumina, my voice steady despite the terror clawing at my chest. “Right now. Don’t wait, don’t ask
questions. Just get him medical attention immediately.”
“Xenois, what’s going on? What aren’t you telling me?”
I’ll explain everything later, I’d said, already heading for the door with Thorne close behind me. ‘Just please, get Ollie help. And
Lumina?
“Yes?”
‘I love you. Both of you. More than anything in this world.”
The line had gone quiet for a moment, and when she’d spoken again, her voice had been soft with confusion. “I love you too. But
Xenois, what’s happening?”
I have to go, I’d said, ending the call before I could break down completely.
