Chapter 150
SOPHIA
22
The satisfaction that was coursing through my veins was giving me a rush of dopamine as I pulled Riley from the passenger seat of
my car.
Everything was falling into place exactly as I’d planned it, each piece of my well thought out scheme coming together like a perfectly
designed puzzle.
The sound of approaching vehicles made me turn back looking pleased with what I was seeing.
Three black SUVs pulled up at the clearing, their engines rumbling in the quiet forest.
I’d been expecting them, of course – Bullet and his team of rogues were nothing if not punctual whenever it came to doing the dirty
work for me in order to get paid handsomely. They loved money the most and had no morality.
The lead vehicle came to a stop just a few feet from where Riley and I stood, and Bullet himself came out from the driver’s seat as he
slammed the door shut looking around nodding his head absentmindedly.
He was exactly what one would expect from a rogue leader. He was tall, scarred with a lot of marks, tattoos all over his body and he
had that predatory smile that made normal people cross the street to avoid him.
But to me, he was simply a tool that I was using, merely a means to an end that would finally give me everything I’d worked so hard
to achieve.
“Miss Kingston,” he said with a mocking bow that made his men chuckle shaking their head at the scene as he continued speaking once he straightened up again. “Right on schedule, I see.”
“Of course,” I replied smoothly, keeping one hand firmly on Riley’s shoulder to prevent him from trying to run away from me. Not that he could, thanks to the compulsion spell in his necklace, but appearances had to be maintained, especially in moments like this.
‘I trust you and your men are prepared to play your parts convincingly?”
“We’re professionals, Bullet said with a shrug, that showed that he wasn’t worried about his men. He was certain that they would do a
good job.
‘We’ll make it look real enough to fool anyone who comes looking. Though I have to ask waste of perfectly good leverage.”
– are you sure about the kid? Seems like a
I looked down at Riley, who was staring up at me with those wide, trusting eyes that had fooled everyone for so long.
Even now, even knowing what was about to happen to him, the compulsion spell prevented him from showing fear or trying to
escape.

Chapter 150
…
“He’s served his purpose,’ I said coldly, removing my eyes from him and focusing on Bullet instead as I went on.
“And now he’s become a liability. Besides, his… departure… is very important and it is required for the next phase of my plan.”
“Your funeral, Bullet said with another shrug, not really caring about the fact a five year old was going to die in front of him. “Or
should I say, his funeral.”
The dark joke made his men laugh, a sound that echoed in the forest clearing.
I felt a brief feeling of regret as I looked at Riley’s small face, but I pushed it aside quickly.
This was necessary and it had to be done. This was the price of getting what I wanted, what I deserved and removing all those
obstacles who tried to stop me.
“Here,” I said, pulling my phone from my pocket and pressing it into Riley’s small hands.
“I need you to do something very important for me, sweetheart.”
Riley looked down at the phone, then back up at me with confusion clear in his expression as he spoke for the first time since this
adventure started.
“What do you want me to do, Mommy?”
“I want you to call Mr. Xenois,” I said, my voice taking on that commanding tone that activated the compulsion spell.
“And I want you to tell him that rogues are chasing us in the woods. Tell him we’re scared and we need help. Can you do that for
Mommy?”
I watched as the spell took hold of him as he seemed dazed for a moment, his eyes blinking rapidly as Riley’s expression became
blank and compliant. “Yes, Mommy,”
he said in that scary obedient voice that always made my skin crawl slightly, even though I was the one who’d caused it.
‘Good boy,’ I said, stroking his hair with false care as I gestured towards a path and continued speaking. Now run toward those trees over there and make the call. And Riley? Make sure you sound really scared, okay? Like you’re running for your life.”
The compulsion spell left him no choice but to obey. I watched as he turned and began running toward the tree line, holding on tight
to the phone like his life depended on it.
Bullet gestured to his men, and they began making the noises that were going to sell this as well – growling, snarling, the sound of heavy footsteps crashing through the underbrush in pursuit.
From my position near the cars, I could hear Riley’s voice as he called Xenois, his words loud enough to be heard by me as i was
standing near the car watching it play out.

Chapter 150
“Mr. Xenois! Mr. Xenois, please help us! There are rogues chasing us! They’re trying to hurt Mommy and me!”
ឌ (68)
The panic in his voice was perfect and genuine and it was exactly what I needed to sell the story to Xenois when he found me.
Even under compulsion, Riley was a naturally good actor, it was probably because he’d spent so much of his life having to pretend everything was fine when it wasn’t.
I could hear Xenois’s voice through the phone speaker, demanding to know where they were, promising to come help. It was too late, and Xenois seemed to realize that as well and yet his promises sounded like he was trying to convince himself either.
The desperation in his tone made me smile as I relished in it. Soon, very soon, that desperation would drive him straight into my
arms.
“I don’t know!” Riley cried, following the script I’d given him perfectly, not missing any line as he continued speaking.
“We went for a drive and now we’re lost and they’re chasing us and Mommy told me to call you and-”
That was my cue. I opened my mouth and let out a scream that would have made any horror movie actress proud.
It was high, terrified, and filled with exactly the kind of pain and fear that would make Xenois believe I was being attacked by wild
rogues.
The sound echoed through the forest, and I saw Riley flinch at the volume and intensity of it. But he didn’t break character, didn’t
question why I was screaming when I was standing safely by the cars.
