Despite the fear that was coursing through my body about Riley’s disappearance. I had to keep a cool head. This wasn’t the time for
me to break down. We finally got to the hospital as we rushed Sophia to the doctor who started treatment on her.
I took a step back from the room, trying to gather my thoughts. It’s been 8 hours since Riley was missing. Search teams took 6 hours
of combing through the woods, trying to find a clue about where the rogues would have come from and how they would have gotten to
know where Sophia apparently went with Riley.
The doctors’ examination of Sophia felt like it was taking forever, but I welcomed every minute of it. It gave me time to think, to
analyze critically without any rush from anyone about what had happened in those woods, and the more I thought about it, the less I
believed her story. There was a huge gap in her story and it seemed that I was the only one who hated her enough to notice it.
I stood in the corner of the examination room, watching as the medical staff cleaned the cut on her forehead and checked her for
signs of concussion.
Sophia lay on the hospital bed, playing the role of the traumatized mother perfectly, her wide eyes were filled with tears, her hands
kept trembling slightly whenever someone touched her or handed her pills, her voice breaking every time she mentioned Riley’s name.
But I’d seen enough fake performances in my years as Xenois’s beta to recognize one when I saw it.
The moment that sealed the deal for me when I realized that Sophia was lying was when she started crying about how much she
loved Riley, how desperately she’d fought to protect him.
I’d watched this woman for months, silently, keeping an eye out even when Xenois was behaving like an asshole and allowing her into
every aspect of his life, letting her disrespect his mate, chose Riley over and over again witjout consideration for Ollie.
I have seen how she treated that boy when she thought no one was looking at her. When she was not putting up an act for Xenois to
fawn over her as usual.
Sophia had never shown genuine maternal instinct toward Riley he was a tool to her, a means to an end in her pursuit of Xenois.
I remembered finding Riley sitting alone in the kitchen one afternoon when I’d come by to deliver packages to Ollie after Zade’s mate Lyn has called, on an unsupervised life breaking protocol.
The boy had been pale and listless, and when I’d asked if he was okay, he’d whispered that he was hungry and he hadn’t eaten yet
before his mum went out.
It turned out Sophia had “forgotten” to feed him breakfast because she’d been too busy playing the devoted nurse to Xenois, who was
still unconscious after his heart attack.
Days later, I’d heard Ollie’s voice, loud and clear during that fall in Xenois office when he has called without permission to hear from

his father and bad begged Xenois to keep Riley away from Sophia.
Dere at five years old, Ollie had sensed something wrong with her that the adults around him had missed.
And now, on the very day that Xenois had finally woken up from whatever spell she’d had him under and decided to kick her out of the house, suddenly they d gone on a mother-son bonding trip that had ended with Riley being kidnapped by rogues and Sophia left
behind like an afterthought. It didn’t make sense one bit.
The timing was too convenient. Everything about this situation stank of manipulation and I knew that this has Sophia’s bloody handprint all over it, but it’s all speculation that I had going on right now and nothing tangible.
Xencis paced the hallway outside the examination room, his phone pressed to his ear as he coordinated with search parties and waited for ransom calls that I was increasingly certain would never come. No kidnappers waited this long to give a ransom call, if they
truly intended on using Riley as a money making machine.
I could see the agony written across his face, the way his hands shook as he struggled with impossible choices, as he tried not to accept the thought that Riley might have been killed off already by the rogues.
Then be finally ended the call, he slammed his fist against the wall hard enough to leave a dent in the drywall.
The uses looked up in alarm, but I stepped forward and placed a hand on his shoulder before he could completely lose control.
What’s wrong?” I asked, though I could already guess from his expression.
That was Zade,” he said, his voice hollow with despair as he took in a deep breath and exhaled before speaking.
‘Ole is in critical condition. Something happened to him today – injuries that don’t make sense, like he fell from a great height even though he was playing in a garden. They’re saying he might not survive through the night.”
My blood ran cold. Two children, both connected to Xenois, both suddenly in mortal danger on the same day. That wasn’t
coincidence.
“Zade’s giving me permission to cross pack boundaries to see Ollie,’ Xenois continued, running his hands through his hair in
frustration.
“But Riley is still missing, and I have no idea where to look for him. I can’t be in two places at once, Thorne. They’re both my sons,
and they both need me.”
He looked at me with eyes full of anguish, seeking guidance I wasn’t sure I could give him.. What do I tell him? That he needed to
pick one and abandon the other?
“I promised myself after Lumina left this pack with Ollie, I would always put her and Ollie first, but how can I abandon Riley when
he’s out there somewhere, probably terrified and alone?’
