Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 211

Chapter 211

LUMINA

76

I felt bile rise in my throat as I thought about all the times Riley had mentioned being taught lessons’ or ‘practicing magic. All those innocent-sounding phrases had been euphemisms for abuse and torture.

My baby boy had been used as a test subject for curse magic, had been deliberately hurt over and over again by an adult who should

have cared for him.

“He still thinks of Sophia as his mama,” I said, my voice hollow with grief and fury. “Did you hear the way he talked about her? Like she’s just away on a trip and will come back soon. He has no idea she’s dead, and part of him still loves her despite everything she

allowed to happen to him.”

“The psychological conditioning runs deep, Lynn said clinically, though I could see the emotion in her eyes despite her professional

tone.

“Children who are abused often maintain loyalty to their abusers, especially when they’ve been isolated from other relationships. Riley’s entire understanding of love and family has been warped by trauma.”

“The therapist we find for him is going to need therapy after dealing with all of this,” Lyn said grimly, still turning the empty vial over in his hands. “The level of magical abuse he’s suffered… I’ve never heard of anything like it. Using a child as a test subject for torture

magic is beyond evil.

I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to contain the rage and grief that threatened to overwhelm me. My son had been stolen from me as a baby and raised by monsters who had destroyed his understanding of safety and love. Every day that passed, every “lesson” they had forced him to endure, had been another day I hadn’t been there to protect him.

‘We need to focus on the immediate problem, I said, forcing myself to think practically despite the emotional turmoil. “Riley said there might be another witch suffering from this curse. Someone else who helped break the spell.”

‘Carol, Xenois said immediately. ‘She’s the one who helped save Riley when we got him back from the cliff. If this curse is targeting

witches who broke the connection spell, then Carol is definitely a target.”

Lyn nodded grimly. “The curse Riley described – it’s designed to make witches watch their loved ones die. If I’m suffering by watching

Zade deteriorate, and if Carol helped with the spell breaking, then someone she loves is probably going through the same thing right

now.”

“We need to call her immediately,” Lynn said, already reaching for her phone. “If her loved one has been cursed the same way Zade

has, they might not have access to the same temporary antidote Riley provided.

“Wait,” I said, remembering something that had been nagging at the back of my mind. “Carolyn Sanders? My best friend?! The woman

you met in our home that I told you came for a visit?” I asked shocked as I saw Xenois’s eyes widened in surprise and recognition.

‘I knew she looked familiar! Ugh she was in my house and hiding and I felt something off about her but I couldn’t place it. Walt what

was she doing there….nevermind, it’s not important. He said shaking his head.

“Carol has been helping me. But what is she doing in Silver Creek City? That’s anti-witch territory. If someone she loves is dying from

a magical curse, she might not be able to get help without revealing what she is.”

Thorne stepped forward. ‘She’s under our protection there,’ he explained. ‘Xenois gave her permission to stay, and Xenols’s parents

Silvia and Samuel have been keeping an eye on her to make sure she stays safe. It’s not perfect protection, given the city’s attitude

toward magic users, but it’s something.”

The irony wasn’t lost on me that Carol had taken refuge in a place that despised her very existence, relying on werewolf protection to

keep her alive while her loved one might die from dark magic.
