Chapter 212

“Call her, Xenois ordered, shifting back to professionalism. “Find out if someone close to her is showing symptoms similar to Zades. If this Andy woman is as thorough as Riley described, she wouldn’t have cursed just one witch and left the other unaffected.

As Lynn dialed Carol’s number, I found myself thinking about the nature of what had been done to Riley. The compulsion necklace that had prevented him from talking about his abuse. The careful way Andy had taught him about different types of curses and antidotes.

The fact that he’d been forced to steal and hide medical supplies because he knew he’d need them.

“Carol, it’s Lynn,” I heard her say into the phone. “We need to know if anyone close to you has been showing signs of magical illness

in the last day or two… What? When did it start?”

The expression on Lynn’s face told me everything I needed to know before she even hung up the phone.

“Marcus,” she said grimly. “Carol’s partner. He’s been suffering from the same symptoms as Zade the spreading curse marks, the increasing pain, the weakness. It started yesterday, around the same time Zade’s condition began. He came looking for her when he

realized that she hadn’t been home in days and caught it just as soon as he crossed the border. Luckily he was able to find her.”

“Does Carol have any antidote?” Lyn asked urgently.

Lynn shook her head. “She’s been trying to research the curse, but she doesn’t have access to the kind of magical resources she’d need

in Silver Creek City. She’s been hiding her attempts to help Marcus because if anyone discovers he’s been cursed by magic, they’ll assume

she did it.”

“We need to get some of Riley’s antidote to Carol immediately,” I said. “How much does he have hidden in his clothes?”

“I asked him before the boys left for dinner,” Lyn replied. “He has two more vials sewn into his shirt and one more in his pants. Each

one is good for about a week to control it.”

Three more vials. Three more weeks of temporary relief, assuming we could get one to Carol in time and use the others to keep both

Zade and Marcus stable while we figured out how to break the curse permanently.

I’ll take one to Carol personally,” Thorne volunteered. “I can be in Silver Creek City by tomorrow morning if I drive through the

night.”

“That’s not enough time,” Xenois said, shaking his head. ‘Marcus has been suffering for over a day already. If the progression is

similar to what we’ve seen with Zade, waiting until tomorrow morning might be too late.”

“Then what do you suggest?” Thorne asked.

‘I’ll shift and run, Xenois replied. “In wolf form, I can cover the distance to Silver Creek City in a few hours. Ill deliver the antidote

to Carol tonight and be back before dawn.”

The plan made sense, but it also meant splitting our forces when we were dealing with an unknown magical threat. If Andy was

watching us, if she had more attacks planned, sending Xenois away from his family seemed dangerous.

But watching Marcus die wasn’t an option either.

“Go,’ I said, making the decision for all of us. “Get that antidote to Carol and Marcus as fast as you can. We’ll figure out the long-term solution while you’re gone.”

As Xenois prepared to leave, I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were playing directly into Andy’s hands. She had cursed the loved ones of the two witches who had helped us, forcing us to scramble for temporary solutions while she remained safely hidden somewhere, planning her next move.

Riley had given us a reprieve, but the real fight was just beginning.
