Chapter 242

The logic was sound hearing it from Kyle’s mouth as he stopped me from making, what almost turned out to be the greatest mistake of my life, considering the fact that I had planned on returning to Lumina, but it felt like swallowing glass to walk away from a fellow werewolf in mortal danger. I forced myself to nod and stay in character, but I made a silent vow to find that man and deal with his

captors before we left Shadow City.

We made our way through the twisting streets, guided by Marcus’s knowledge of the city’s layout. The buildings seemed to shift and change when I wasn’t looking directly at them, creating a disorienting maze that would have been impossible to navigate without a local

guide.

Finally, we reached Andy’s house – or what Marcus claimed was Andy’s house. It was a large, imposing structure that looked like it had been carved from a single piece of black stone. But as we watched from our concealment across the street, there were no signs of

movement or life.

“It looks empty,” Carol whispered, her voice still shaky from the vampire transport.

“Too empty,” I agreed. “This feels like a trap.”

Marcus studied the building intently, his expression troubled as he took in the situation. “Andy’s paranoid, but she’s not usually this

obvious about abandoning a location, especially when it can be used to her advantage. Something’s not right.”

– “Maybe she really doesn’t know we’re coming,” my father suggested hopefully, trying to look at the good side of the situation.

‘Or maybe she knows exactly when and where we’ll arrive,” my mother countered.

We debated our options for several minutes, but ultimately we were running out of time. Every moment we delayed gave Andy more

opportunity to strike at Lumina and the boys.

“I’ll go in first,” Marcus decided, after a while. “If it’s a trap, at least the rest of you will survive to warn the others.”

“Marcus, no, Carol protested, grabbing his arm. “We should find another way.”

“There is no other way,” he replied gently, kissing her forehead. “This is why we came here.”

Before anyone could stop him, Marcus moved with vampire speed, disappearing from our position and reappearing at the front door of Andy’s house. He had just enough time to turn the handle before the entire building erupted in a massive explosion.

The blast was so powerful it knocked all of us backward, filling the air with debris and smoke. Carol screamed and tried to run toward the burning wreckage, but I caught her around the waist and held her back.

“Marcus!” she sobbed, struggling against my grip. “Let me go! He’s in there!”

“You can’t help him by getting yourself killed,” I said grimly, though my own heart was sinking at the sight of the destruction. This did not look good at all for Marcus, since he isn’t fireproof, and I was already beginning to feel the weight of a dead man on me.

Then, through the smoke and flames, I saw a figure emerge from the back of the building. Marcus stumbled into view, coughing and covered in soot but miraculously alive. I do not know who was more relieved, me or Carol but I felt my heart skip a beat as I breathed heavily out of relief.

Carol broke free from my hold and ran to him, throwing her arms around his neck as he caught her in a fierce embrace.

“I’m okay,” he said hoarsely, dropping a kiss on top of her head. “The explosion was triggered by the front door, but there was a back exit. Andy knew we were coming and cleared out before we arrived.”

The explosion had attracted attention from all over the neighborhood as people were particularly drawn to the noise and the burning building which was serving as a beacon. I could see figures moving toward us from multiple directions, and none of them looked friendly.

“Time to go,” Kyle said urgently. “This whole area is about to become very hostile. Andy may not be here right now, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t leave us alone, considering the explosion.”

The three vampires moved to gather us for another high-speed evacuation, but as we prepared to leave Shadow City behind, I noticed something that stopped me cold.

Kashton was carrying an additional passenger – the werewolf who had been captured by the group we’d encountered earlier. During the chaos of the explosion, he’d apparently managed to retrieve the prisoner, without telling any of us, or seeing him leave. It was a blur, one second, we were in shadow city and the next, we were out in the middle of nowhere as Kashton dropped the teenager with a thud

which got everyone’s attention.

“Couldn’t leave him,” Kashton said simply when he saw my surprised expression. “Seemed wrong to let them burn him while we were

here playing hero.”

I felt a surge of respect for the young vampire. Despite all the animosity between our species, he’d risked his own safety to save a

complete stranger. Not that it benefitted him or anything.

“Thank you,” I said sincerely. “That was the right thing to do.”

As we prepared for another jarring journey at vampire speed, I couldn’t shake the feeling that we’d walked straight into Andy’s trap. She’d known we were coming, had time to prepare, and had probably been watching our every move since we arrived.

We’d gained almost no useful information, nearly lost Marcus, and now we were returning home with the knowledge that Andy was

not only aware of our plans but was likely already several steps ahead of us.

The mission had been a complete failure, and I had the sinking feeling that while we’d been chasing shadows in Shadow City, Andy had been making her real move against my family. And I was running out of plans to stop her. If she knew we were coming, then definitely she knew where Lumina and the boys were, and I was beginning to have a sinking realization that we were far too late.
