Chapter 243
RILEY
My lungs burned from exertion as I dragged Ollie through the maze of parked cars behind the hospital, trying to get him to safety, it is what Mama Lumina would have wanted, and maybe she wouldn’t think I am bad luck and throw me before Mama Sophia would come
back.
I was wary of everything and everyone as my eyes kept scanning everywhere, cataloguing everything that might be useful or become a
hindrance to what I was trying to accomplish.
Every shadow could hide one of Bullet’s men, every sound could mean we’d been found and not by the good guys. The good guys
never did, until it was too late.
The emergency sirens from inside the building were getting louder, mixing with screams and what sounded like breaking glass.
“Riley, I can’t run anymore,” Ollie gasped, stumbling beside me. His face was flushed red and tears were streaming down his cheeks, as he looked very scared and was barely holding his composure together, but he was too scared to stop, in fear of being captured by Bullet. Oh he was going to need so much therapy after this, concerning his sheltered life.
“My legs hurt.”
I wanted to stop too. My shoulder was throbbing where I’d hit the ground, and there was a sharp pain in my side that got worse every time I took a breath, but I could feel, it wasn’t a broken rib or internal bleeding which meant that I was still functioning. But I could still hear voices behind us, Bullet’s men coordinating their search, getting closer.
“Just a little further,” I whispered, pulling him between two large SUVS that would hide us from the hospital windows. “We need to
find somewhere safe to think.”
Through the gaps between vehicles, I could see the ice cream truck still parked where it had been before. But now there were more people around it – at least six figures in dark clothing, all moving with the kind of purpose that made my stomach clench with fear, they seemed to be not scared of security, which meant that they had disabled their security and compromised communication which meant
that nobody was coming for us.
One of them was talking into a radio, probably reporting to Bullet that we’d escaped. Another was unpacking what looked like weapons from the back of the truck. These weren’t just hired muscle this was a full team, prepared for a prolonged hunt.
–
“What’s happening?” Ollie whispered, crouching down beside me behind the SUV’s tire. “Why are those people trying to hurt us?”
How could I explain Andy’s world to someone who’d grown up safe and loved? How could I make him understand that some people saw children as nothing more than problems to be solved permanently?
“They work for my Ma… Aunt Andy,” I said quietly, omitting the real truth, watching as two of the men started walking in our direction, checking between cars for any signs of us anymore. If I told him it was Mama Sophia, that would be handing him more

ammunition and that wasn’t what I needed right now. “She doesn’t want me to live with Mama Lumina anymore.”
“So they came to take you back?”
I swallowed hard. “Not take me back. Make sure I can’t tell anyone about the things I know.”
Ollie’s eyes went wide as he processed what I meant. “They want to kill you?”

I nodded, hating how scared he looked, hating that I’d dragged him into this. “And now they’ll have to kill you too, because you’ve
seen them.”
The footsteps were getting closer. I could hear the men talking in low voices, dividing up the parking lot between them to make sure
they didn’t miss any hiding spots.
“Stay very quiet,” I breathed into Ollie’s ear. “Don’t move until I say.”
Through the gap under the SUV, I could see boots approaching our row of cars. They were moving slowly, methodically, checking
every possible hiding place. When they reached our vehicle, we’d be trapped with nowhere to run.
My mind raced, trying to remember everything Mama Sophia had taught me about staying hidden, about being invisible when dangerous people were hunting. The lessons had always seemed like games back then, ways to practice being perfect and obedient. Now I
understood they’d been survival skills.
The boots stopped right next to our SUV. I pressed my hand over Ollie’s mouth to keep him from making any sound, and held my breath as someone walked around the vehicle, checking underneath and around the tires.
“Nothing here,” a voice called out, and the boots moved on to the next car.
I waited until they were several cars away before letting myself breathe again. But we couldn’t stay hidden much longer. Eventually they’d expand their search, or bring in more men, or decide to check places they’d already looked.
“We need to get out of the parking lot,” I whispered to Ollie. “Can you be very brave and very quiet?”
He nodded, though I could see his hands shaking.
I studied the area around us, looking for the best escape route.
There was a gap between the hospital and the building next to it some kind of office complex with its own parking area. If we could make it across the open space without being seen, then we have a better chance of escaping this, we might be able to lose ourselves in the bigger building’s structure.
“See that building over there?” I pointed toward the office complex. “We’re going to crawl under the cars until we get to the edge of the parking lot, then run as fast as we can to those doors.”

“What if they see us?” Ollie asked hesitating as he seemed unsure of this plan
“Then we keep running and hope we’re faster than they are.” I said, wry knowing it wasn’t a good idea to tell him how hopeless our
chances were, but he needed to know just how important this was essential to us.
