Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 244

Chapter 244

RILEY

I started moving first, staying low and using the parked cars as cover, Incase they started shooting at us again. Ollie followed close

behind me, trying to copy my movements exactly, knowing how dire it was at the moment.

We made it about halfway across the lot before I heard shouting behind us.

“There! By the blue sedan!”

I grabbed Ollie’s hand and abandoned any attempt at stealth. “Run!”

We sprinted across the remaining distance as gunshots rang out behind us. The bullets sparked off the concrete and shattered car

windows, but we were moving too erratically for them to get a clear shot.

The office building’s doors were locked, but there was a loading dock around the side that came with a ramp that led up to a delivery entrance. I pulled Ollie up the ramp just as more of Bullet’s men came around the corner of the hospital.

The delivery door was secured with a chain and padlock, but the chain was just loose enough that we could squeeze through the gap. I pushed Ollie through first, then followed him into the dark interior of the building.

We found ourselves in some kind of storage area, filled with boxes and industrial items. Emergency lighting cast everything in a dim

red glow, just like at the hospital.

Whatever was happening wasn’t limited to one building someone had cut power to this entire area.

“This way,” I whispered, leading Ollie deeper into the building. We needed to get as far from the entrance as possible before they

figured out where we’d gone.

The building seemed to be some kind of office complex, with long hallways lined with doors leading to different businesses.

Most of the doors were locked, but we found one that opened into what looked like a law office – empty desks, filing cabinets, and a

water cooler in the corner.

“Can we hide here?” Ollie asked hopefully.

I shook my head. “They’ll check every room eventually. We need to keep moving.”

But as I turned toward the office’s interior door, I heard something that made my blood freeze. The sound of the loading dock chain being cut with bolt cutters. They’d found our entry point faster than I’d expected.

“How many of them are there?” Ollie whispered.

Too many, Even if it was just Bullet’s original team, six armed adults against two children wasn’t a fight we could win. And they probably had more people positioned around the city, ready to close off escape routes.

I was starting to understand the scope of what she’d planned. This wasn’t just about eliminating the family it was about making a statement. Showing what happened to people who tried to leave her organization.

“Riley, Ollie said quietly, “I’m sorry I was mean to you about Sophia. I didn’t understand.”

“You were trying to protect me,” I said. “That’s what brothers do.”

The word felt strange in my mouth, but also right. Ollie was my brother, and I was responsible for keeping him safe, even if it meant

risking everything.

Footsteps echoed from the hallway outside the law office. They were moving faster now, less concerned about stealth since they knew

we were in the building. Soon they’d start kicking down doors, checking every room systematically.

I looked around the office, searching for anything that might help us. There was a fire escape map on the wall showing the building’s layout. We were on the second floor, and there were stairwells at both ends of the hall. But they’d probably positioned people at the exits

to cut off those routes.

Then I noticed something else on the map – a notation about roof access through the top floor stairwell. If we could get to the roof, maybe we could find a way down on the other side of the building, away from where they’d expect us to emerge.

“We’re going up,” I told Ollie, pointing toward the map.

“Up? Shouldn’t we be trying to get out?”

“Sometimes the best way out is through the last place they’d expect you to go.”

It was something Mama Sophia used to say during our training exercises. When everyone expects you to run toward safety, sometimes survival means running toward danger instead.

The hallway was empty when we slipped out of the law office, but I could hear voices and footsteps coming from different directions. They were spreading out through the building, covering all the obvious escape routes.

We made it to the stairwell without being spotted, but as we started climbing toward the upper floors, I heard the fire door slam open below us. Someone was checking the stairwell, probably assuming we’d tried to go down instead of up.

‘Keep climbing,” I whispered to Ollie. “Don’t stop no matter what you hear.”

By the time we reached the fourth floor, I could hear multiple sets of footsteps in the stairwell below us. They’d figured out our direction and were following our trail upward. We had maybe a few minutes before they caught up.

The roof access door was locked, but the lock was old and simple. I’d learned how to pick basic locks during my time with Mama

Wendy at six feet, I said, though it looked much farther when I stared down at the street below. “And look there’s a lower

section on that building we could land on.”

The fire door burst open behind us, and Bullet stepped onto the roof with his gun drawn. His eyes locked onto mine across the distance, and I saw the cold satisfaction in his expression as he realized we were trapped.

End of the line, Riley, he called out, raising his weapon. “My boss sends her regards.”
