Chapter 245

LUMINA

1 gasped awake, my lungs burning as if I’d been drowning. The taste of copper filled my mouth, and my head pounded with a rhythm

that made thinking nearly impossible. For several disorienting moments, I couldn’t remember where I was or what had happened.

Then the memories crashed over me like a tidal wave.

The lights going out. The screaming from deeper in the hospital. The metallic scent of blood hitting my nose. Something large and snarling launching itself at me from the shadows not human, but not any species I could identify. The creature’s glowing eyes and bared fangs as my wolf took over, forcing my shift just in time to meet the attack.

I pushed myself up from the floor of the waiting area, my body protesting every movement. My clothes were torn and bloodstained, and there were deep scratches along my arms that were already beginning to heal. Beside me lay the motionless form of what looked like a nightmare-part wolf, part something else entirely, with unnatural proportions and teeth that belonged in a horror movie.

A nightwalker. I’d heard stories about them but never believed they were real. They were wolves exiled turning rogues and then those rogues becoming twisted by dark magic, neither fully alive nor dead, existing only to hunt and destroy. The fact that one had attacked me here, now, meant this wasn’t a random assault. Someone had deliberately sent it after us.

“Lyn,” I whispered, my voice hoarse and raw. Where was he? The last thing I remembered was being locked in combat with the nightwalker, trying to get to my boys. I’d been so focused on reaching Riley and Ollie that I’d lost track of everything else.

I staggered to my feet, ignoring the way the room spun around me. The emergency lighting cast everything in that eerie red glow, making the destruction look even worse than it probably was. Chairs were overturned, papers scattered everywhere, and there were dark stains on the floor that I tried not to think about too hard.

Moving as quickly as my injured body would allow, I made my way toward Dr. Sloane’s office. The door was hanging off its hinges, and my heart clenched with terror at what I might find inside.

The office was in complete disarray. Furniture was overturned, papers were scattered across the floor, and there was a spider web of cracks spreading across the large window that looked out over the balcony, In the middle of it all, Dr. Sloane lay sprawled on the ground near her desk, blood trickling from a wound on her forehead.

I rushed to her side, dropping to my knees and gently checking for a pulse. It was there, steady and strong, which sent relief flooding through me. As I touched her shoulder, she groaned and her eyes fluttered open.

“Dr. Sloane,” I said urgently. “Are you okay? What happened to my boys?”

She blinked several times, clearly disoriented and struggling to focus. Slowly, she pushed herself up into a sitting position with my help, one hand going to her head where a nasty bruise was already forming.

“The boys,” she said weakly, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Riley… he knocked me out.”

“What?” I stared at her, certain I’d misheard. “That’s impossible, Riley would never hurt anyone.”

But even as I said the words, doubt began creeping into my mind. Riley had been acting strangely during the session, constantly

scanning the room for exits, his body tense as if preparing to flee. And he’d been so adamant about defending Sophia, even when it was

clear she’d hurt him.

“He was watching the balcony,” Dr. Sloane continued, her memory apparently returning. “Kept looking at the parking lot like he was

waiting for something. When I tried to bring him back Inside, he grabbed a vase and… and hit me with it. I don’t think he wanted to hurt

me, but he seemed terrified of something.”

“Where did they go?” I demanded, my voice rising with panic..

“The balcony,” she said, pointing toward the cracked window.

“He grabbed Ollie and they… they jumped.”

“Jumped? 1 felt the blood drain from my face. We were on the second floor. A fall from that height could easily kill a child, especially

onto concrete.

I rushed to the balcony door and threw it open, leaning over the railing to look down at the courtyard below. But there was no sign of my boys no broken bodies, no blood stains on the pavement. Just a torn awning that looked like it had been ripped by something heavy

falling through it.

“They’re not here,” I called back to Dr. Sloane, my voice cracking with a mixture of relief and renewed terror. “There’s no blood, no

bodies. They made it down alive.”

But where were they now? And why had Riley felt the need to take such a desperate action? Whatever he’d seen in that parking lot had scared him badly enough to risk both their lives rather than face it.

I was about to climb over the balcony railing myself to search the courtyard when I heard voices shouting from inside the building. Heavy footsteps pounded down the hallway, accompanied by the sound of multiple people calling out commands.

“Lumina! Where are you?”

*Search every room!”

“Check for survivors!”

Alpha Zade’s voice carried over the others, filled with an authority that made the walls seem to vibrate. A moment later, he burst through the doorway with Lynn close behind him, followed by a team of guards in full tactical gear.

The relief of seeing familiar faces almost brought me to my knees. I stumbled back into the office just as Zade reached me, his strong

arms catching me before I could collapse entirely.

“Lumina,’ he said, his voice rough with emotion as he held me against his chest. “Thank the moon goddess you’re alive. When we got

the reports about the attack…

I clung to him for a moment, drawing strength from his solid presence. But the relief was short-lived as the reality of our situation

crashed over me again.

“The boys, I gasped, pulling back to look at him. “Riley and Ollie are missing. And Lyn… where’s Lyn?”
