The convoy moved through the night like a pack of predators returning from a failed hunt. Three black SUVs cutting through empty

highways, their occupants silent with the weight of what we’d discovered in Shadow City. The mission had been a complete disaster –

worse than a disaster. We’d walked straight into a trap that had cost us everything.

My hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that the metal was beginning to warp under the pressure. Beside me, Marcus stared out the window with hollow eyes, while Carol sat in the back seat going through the intelligence we’d managed to salvage from Andy’s

abandoned safe house. The scraps of information we’d found painted a picture that made my wolf pace restlessly beneath my skin, hungry

for blood and revenge.

The secure phone rang, cutting through the oppressive silence. Zade’s name appeared on the caller ID, and I answered immediately.

“Tell me you have good news,” I said without wasting time, though something in my chest already knew that wasn’t going to be the

“Xenois.” Zade’s voice was rough with exhaustion and something else – fear. In all the years I’d known him, I’d never heard that particular tone from the Alpha of one of the most powerful packs on the continent.

“How far out are you?”

“Two hours, maybe less if I keep pushing the speed limit,” I replied, my wolf’s senses picking up the tension in his voice even through the phone’s speaker. “What’s happened? Is Lumina okay? What about the boys?”

The pause that followed lasted long enough for my heart to stop beating entirely. When Zade finally spoke, his words hit me like

physical blows.

“There was an attack on the hospital during Riley’s therapy session. Coordinated assault using nightwalkers and human operatives. Lumina was injured but she’s recovering. Ollie is safe traumatized but physically unharmed.”

He paused again, and I could hear him struggling with what came next.

“Riley is missing. And Lyn…” Another pause, this one even more ominous. “Lyn was taken.”

The phone cracked in my grip. Around me, I could hear Marcus swearing viciously while Carol made a sound like she’d been punched in the stomach. But all I could focus on was the roaring in my ears, the way my wolf was clawing at the inside of my skull, demanding to be released so it could tear apart everyone responsible for touching my family.

“Taken by who?” I managed to ask, though my voice sounded distorted even to my own ears.

“Andy. We’re certain of it now. This whole thing was orchestrated as retaliation for what happened to Sophia. She specifically targeted the people she blames for disrupting her operation.”

I closed my eyes, fighting to maintain control. The SUV was starting to drift across lanes as my grip on both the steering wheel and

my human form began to slip. Marcus reached over and steadied the wheel, his own face pale with shock.

“There’s more, Zade continued.

About an hour ago, one of my perimeter guards found something. A message addressed to you, Marcus, and me specifically. It was

pinned to a tree just outside our security perimeter.

“What kind of message?”

“Written on white paper in what looks like blood. The scent signature matches Lyn’s blood, Xenois. She’s letting us know she has him,

and that she’s not planning to be gentle about it.”

The wolf inside me let out a howl of rage that I barely managed to keep from echoing out loud. My rival’s mate, one of the gentlest

souls I’d ever known, was in the hands of a woman who turned children into weapons.

A healer who’d never hurt anyone in his life was being used as bait in a game that could only end in blood and death.

“What does the message say?” Marcus asked, leaning closer to the phone. His voice was steady, but I could see the muscle jumping în

his jaw that meant he was barely holding himself together.
