“I’ll read it exactly as written,” Zade said. “”To the three men who think they can interfere in family business – you cost me my sister and my life’s work. Now I have something that belongs to you. The healer is comfortable for now, but that could change quickly depending on your cooperation. You have 48 hours to bring yourselves to the coordinates I’m about to give you, Come afone. No backup, no cavalry, no clever plans. Just the three of you, walking into a situation you won’t walk out of. If you try to be heroes, the healer dies first. If you involve law enforcement, the healer dies first. If you’re even five minutes late, the healer dies first. This is not a negotiation. This is justice. The coordinates are attached.”

Carol leaned forward from the back seat, her face set in grim lines. “She’s using Lyn as leverage to draw us into a trap. The same way she used the hospital attack to cover taking him in the first place.”

“It’s not a trap if we know it’s a trap,” Marcus said quietly. “It’s a duel. Two days….that is when the kid’s temporary antidote wears off as well. Zade and I would be dead by then as well, elther way,”

I understood what he meant. Andy wasn’t trying to trick us into anything she was openly challenging us to come and face her. The coordinates, the ultimatum, the blood-stained paper it was all designed to provoke us into exactly the kind of reckless response that

would get us killed. She was betting that our love for Lyn would override our tactical judgment.

She was probably right.

“What about Riley?” I asked, refocusing on the other half of this nightmare. “Any leads on where he might be?”

“The security footage shows him fighting someone on a rooftop a professional killer called Bullet who works for Sophia’s

organization. Both of them fell from the building during the struggle, but we only found Bullet’s body. Riley’s gone without a trace.”

The implication was clear, even though Zade didn’t say it directly. Either Riley was dead and his body had been taken, or he’d

somehow survived the fall and was now in Andy’s custody as well. Neither option was acceptable.

“I need to see that footage,” I said. “And I need to talk to Lumina and Ollie. I need to understand exactly what happened and how this

all fits together.”

“Xenois,” Zade’s voice took on a warning tone, ‘I can practically hear you planning something stupid through the phone. Don’t make any decisions until we can sit down and discuss this properly. Andy is trying to manipulate us into acting emotionally instead of

strategically.”

“My son is missing and your own goddamn mate is being tortured by the same woman who turned children into weapons for over a decade, I replied, my voice coming out as more growl than words. “Emotional is all I’ve got right now.”

But even as I said It, I knew Zade was right. Andy had orchestrated this entire situation to push us into making exactly the kind of impulsive decision that would play into her hands. She’d studied us, learned our weaknesses, and crafted a scenario designed to exploit every protective instinct we had.

She’d taken Lyn because she knew we’d move heaven and earth to get him back. She’d made Riley disappear to ensure that Lumina

and I would be desperate enough to take any risk. And she’d given us a time limit to make sure we wouldn’t have the luxury of planning

carefully.

It was masterfully cruel, and it was working exactly as intended.

“You think I don’t know that. God, I want Lyn back as much as everyone else, eve more. But if we all become emotional and driven by

anger, Andy is winning. We both can’t afford to lose our heads right now. I owe Lyn that.”

“The coordinates,” I said. “Where is she?”

*From what she sent to us, we were able to pinpoint her address to be an abandoned industrial complex about two hundred miles

north of here. Used to be a chemical plant before it was shut down for environmental violations. Remote location, multiple buildings,

plenty of places to set up ambush points or hold prisoners.”

“Perfect terrain for a trap, Marcus observed grimly.

“Or for a final showdown,” Carol added. “Maybe that’s what she really wants to face the two witches she holds responsible for

destroying her sister life and go out in a blaze of glory. But that would be me, and Lyn, and our loved ones died either way.”

I considered that possibility as we continued racing through the night toward Zade’s city. Andy had lost everything – her organization, her reputation, her sister Sophia, and probably most of her resources. A woman with nothing left to lose was arguably more dangerous

than one with everything to protect.

But there was something else bothering me about this whole situation, something that didn’t quite add up with what I knew about

Andy’s methods and priorities.

“Why Lyn specifically?” I asked. “If she wanted leverage against us, there were other targets she could have chosen. Why take someone

whose only real ability is healing?”

“Maybe that’s exactly why,” Zade replied thoughtfully. “Lyn can’t fight back effectively, but his abilities make him valuable to keep alive. She gets a hostage who won’t try to escape and a medic who can patch up her people if they get injured during whatever

confrontation she’s planning.”

That made sense from a tactical standpoint, but something still felt off. Andy was smart enough to know that taking Lyn would bring

down the wrath of multiple powerful packs.

She had to have a bigger plan than just revenge.

“We’ll figure it out when we get there,” I said finally. “How long until those 48 hours are up?”

“Thirty-six hours from now. Assuming she’s not lying about the timeline.”

Thirty-six hours to plan an assault on a fortified position while knowing it was a trap. Thirty-six hours to figure out how to rescue Lyn without getting him killed in the process. Thirty-six hours to find Riley and bring him home safely.

It wasn’t enough time. But it was all the time we had.
