Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 255

Chapter 255

LAKE

Time had lost all meaning in this concrete hell. Hours or days could have passed since Andy had brought me the healer to work on – 1

couldn’t tell anymore. The fluorescent lights overhead never changed, casting the same harsh glare that made everything look sickly and

wrong. But I didn’t need to keep track of time, I only needed to follow Andy’s instructions and do what she’d trained me to do.

The scalpel felt familiar in my small hands as I made another precise incision along the healer’s forearm. Lyn – that was his name, though Andy had told me not to think of him as a person with a name. Just think of him as a tool, she’d said. A source of information

wrapped in flesh that happened to be able to repair itself.

That self-healing ability made everything so much worse for him.

Every cut I made, every nerve I severed, every piece of skin I peeled away it all grew back within minutes, forcing him to experience the pain over and over again. His body betrayed him by refusing to let him escape into unconsciousness or shock. It kept him awake and

aware for every second of what I was doing to him.

“Please,” Lyn whispered through cracked lips, his voice hoarse from screaming. “Please, you don’t have to do this. I know you’re just a

child. I know this isn’t who you really are.”

I paused in my work, the scalpel hovering over his exposed ribcage. Andy had warned me that he would try this that he would attempt to make me see him as human, to make me question my purpose. She’d taught me how to handle these moments.

. “I know exactly who I am,” I replied in the flat, emotionless tone Andy had drilled into me. “I am loyal only to the person who saved

me from abandonment. I am a tool in service of justice.”

But even as I said the words, something deep inside me twisted with discomfort. The healer’s eyes held such genuine pain – not just physical pain, but the kind of soul-deep anguish that came from watching innocence be corrupted. He was looking at me the way adults used to look at me before Andy found me. Before she taught me that pity was just another form of cruelty.

Andy watched from her chair across the room, a satisfied smile playing at the corners of her mouth. She’d been observing my work for hours, occasionally offering suggestions or corrections, but mostly just enjoying the show. This wasn’t really about extracting information. – she’d told me as much earlier. This was about proving a point, about demonstrating the kind of loyalty she’d created in me.

“Whether or not you speak doesn’t really matter,” Andy said conversationally to Lyn, as if she were discussing the weather instead of torture. “This is about teaching you and your friends a lesson about the consequences of interfering in my business. But please, feel free to scream some more. Lake finds it encouraging.”

B

That wasn’t true. The screaming didn’t encourage me it made something sick twist in my stomach. But I’d learned long ago not to show Andy any signs of weakness or doubt. She had ways of correcting such flaws, and I’d experienced enough of her corrections to last

several lifetimes.

I went back to my work, making small, precise cuts that would cause maximum pain while allowing his healing factor to keep him

conscious. Andy had taught me the techniques where to cut to hit the most nerve clusters, how to avoid major arteries that might cause

him to bleed out too quickly, which muscles to target to create the most lasting agony.

“You’re not going to get away with this,” Lyn managed to say between gasps of pain. “My people will find you. They’ll make sure you

pay for all the horrors you’ve committed.”
