Chapter 257
LAKE

But even as I said it, I could feel something shifting inside me. The absolute certainty I’d carried for so long was developing hairline
cracks.
That’s when I sensed them – multiple presences at the boundary of the compound. Too far away to see clearly, and there was
something obscuring them, probably magical interference. But they were there, moving with purpose toward our location.
“Andy,” I said, my voice taking on an urgent tone. “There are people at the boundary.”
Her head snapped up, all traces of casual cruelty disappearing from her expression. “What kind of people? How many?”
“I can’t see them clearly,” I replied, extending my supernatural senses as far as they would reach. “There’s some kind of witch blocking
them. But they’re definitely moving this way.”
Andy stood up abruptly, her face cycling through anger, fear, and cold calculation. “Stay here,” she ordered.
“Continue working on the healer. If anyone tries to interfere, kill him immediately.”
She strode out of the room, leaving me alone with Lyn for the first time since we’d begun this session. The sudden quiet felt strange after hours of Andy’s commentary and the healer’s periodic cries of pain.
I turned back to Lyn, raising the scalpel to continue my work, when a familiar voice spoke from the shadows near the door.
“You know, when you lied and told Andy people were at the boundary, I expected you might give Lyn a break.”
My hand froze. I knew that voice, even though it had been months since I’d heard it. Even though it was deeper now, more mature, shaped by experiences I’d never shared.
Riley stepped out of the shadows, and my heart stopped beating entirely.
He looked older, taller, but those were still the same green eyes that had once promised we’d always look out for each other. The same face that had been the last thing I’d seen before Andy’s people found me alone and terrified in that abandoned building.
“If I allowed Lyn to rest,” I said, my voice sounding strange and distant to my own ears, “you wouldn’t be forced to come out of
hiding.”
It was a test, a way to confirm this wasn’t some hallucination brought on by exhaustion or wishful thinking.
Riley had always been too protective for his own good. Even when we were both barely surviving on the streets, he’d put himself at
risk to help others.

“Riley?” Lyn’s voice was filled with shock and something that might have been hope. “How did you… are you alone?”
“I am,” Riley replied, never taking his eyes off me. “I sensed Lake in the city and followed him here.”

The casual way he said it made my chest tighten with an emotion I’d thought Andy had trained out of me. He’d sensed me. After all
these time, after everything that had happened, some part of him was still connected to me.
“You abandoned me,” I said, the words coming out harsh and accusing. “You found your real family and forgot I ever existed.”
Riley’s face crumpled with guilt and pain. “Lake, I didn’t abandon you. Mama took me to Silver Creek to get back and Alpha using
magic. And I was under her control as well. And I did not know how to find you.”
“Liar,” I spat, but the word felt hollow. I could see the truth in his eyes, the genuine anguish of someone who’d carried guilt for years.
“Let Lyn go,” Riley said quietly. “He’s innocent in all of this. Whatever happened between us, whatever I did wrong, he doesn’t deserve
to pay for it.”
I shook my head. “I can’t. Andy saved me. She gave me purpose when you threw me away.”
