Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 258

Chapter 258

“I didn’t throw you away! The words came out as a shout, filled with more emotion than I’d heard from Riley in all our childhood years together. “I was going to come back for you. I was going to find a way for us to be together again.”

“Then why didn’t you? It’s been more than a year. I was left alone in that underground prison, chained up, waiting for you.”

The question hung in the air between us, heavy with years of hurt and abandonment.

Riley’s face cycled through grief, anger, and something that looked like desperation.

“Because I’m here now,” he said finally. “I’m sorry I didn’t come back sooner, but I’m here now. We can leave together. We can find

Mama Sophia and-”

“Sophia is dead,” I interrupted, the words coming out flat and brutal.

“Your real family killed her.”

true.

I watched the color drain from Riley’s face, saw the way his whole body seemed to crumple inward. “That’s not… no, that can’t be

“Tell him,” I ordered Lyn, pressing the scalpel against the healer’s throat.

“Tell him how his precious new family murdered the woman who raised us.”

Lyn met Riley’s eyes with reluctant sympathy. “I’m sorry, Riley. It’s true. Sophia was killed during a confrontation with Xenois and his

parents.”

The sound Riley made was barely human a keening wail of grief that seemed to come from the deepest part of his soul. I watched him break apart, watched years of hope and love crumble into dust.

“Then I have only you now,” Riley said finally, his voice hollow with loss. “You’re all I have left of that life.”

Something inside my chest cracked open. This was what I’d wanted to hear for so long- that I mattered to him, that I was important enough to choose over his new family. But seeing him in such pain made the victory feel hollow and wrong.

“But Lyn doesn’t deserve this,” Riley continued. “Whatever happens between us, he’s innocent.”

I found myself hesitating, the scalpel trembling in my grip. Riley was looking at me with such desperate hope, such complete trust that I would make the right choice.

“You swore to always be loyal to me until death,” Riley said quietly. “Will you go back on your words?”

Chapter 258

The old promise hung between us like a bridge across years of separation and pain. I remembered the night we’d made that vow, huddled together in an abandoned warehouse, two scared children promising to protect each other against a world that wanted to destroy

“You’re an asshole for invoking that,” I said, but I could already feel my resolve crumbling.

Riley grinned that same mischievous smile that had once been able to talk us out of any trouble. “I know.”

I looked down at Lyn, then back at Riley, then at the scalpel in my hand. Andy had trained me to be loyal to her, but that loyalty had

been built on lies and manipulation. The loyalty I’d sworn to Riley had been built on love and shared suffering.

“Don’t do this,” Lyn said urgently, reading the decision in my face.

“Don’t run away. Both of you. Stay and fight. Choose to be better than what she made you.”

But we weren’t listening anymore. Riley and I were already planning our escape, already imagining a life where we could be together

again, where the years of separation could be erased like they’d never happened.

We were planning to disappear into the shadows, and leave everything else behind.
