Chapter 290
LUMINA

The mouth of the cave yawned before us like a wound in the earth, dark and foreboding against the late afternoon sky. I stood between Lyn and Lynn, my hands clenched into fists at my sides as I stared into the shadows that held our greatest enemy. The weight of what we were about to do pressed down on my shoulders, but underneath the gravity of the moment, I felt something I hadn’t
–
experienced in years a sense of righteous purpose that burned clean and bright in my chest.
Andy was down there, chained and helpless, paying for crimes that had torn my family apart and traumatized my son beyond repair. The rational part of my mind whispered that this was wrong, that we were better than this, that justice should be left to proper authorities. But the mother in me, the part that had watched Riley flinch away from touch and speak in that eerily controlled voice,
silenced those doubts with ruthless efficiency.
“Is anyone having second thoughts about this?” I asked quietly, giving both of my companions one last chance to walk away from
what we were about to do.
Lyn’s jaw was set with grim determination, his usually gentle features hardened by memories of torture and humiliation. “Not even close,” he said, his voice carrying an edge I’d rarely heard from him.
Lynn shook her head, her expression mirroring her twin’s resolve. “She hurt my brother twice. She nearly killed the man he loves. She destroyed your family.” Her pale eyes met mine with unflinching certainty. “Some things can’t be forgiven.”
I nodded, feeling a surge of gratitude for their unwavering support. This wasn’t just about Riley anymore – it was about all the lives Andy had shattered in her quest for power and revenge. Lyn bore scars both physical and psychological from his day of torture at her hands. Zade had nearly died from the lover’s curse she’d cast. Our entire pack structure had been thrown into chaos by her manipulations.
We made our way down the rough-hewn steps carved into the cave wall, our footsteps echoing in the narrow passage. The air grew colder as we descended, heavy with moisture and the stench of human waste and infection.
Battery-powered lanterns had been strung along the walls, casting harsh shadows that danced with our movement.
The makeshift prison cell came into view as we rounded the final corner a cage of reinforced steel bars anchored deep into the living rock. Inside, Andy sat huddled in one corner, her once-pristine appearance reduced to something feral and broken. Her clothes hung in tatters, stained with blood and other fluids I didn’t want to identify. Open wounds festered on her exposed skin, the result of Zade’s people ensuring she remained too weak to attempt escape through magic.
She looked up as our footsteps approached, her eyes narrowing with recognition and hatred. Despite her pitiful condition, there was still defiance in her posture, still that core of arrogance that had driven her to commit such atrocities.
“Well, well, she rasped, her voice hoarse from disuse and dehydration.
“Come to gloat, have we? I should have expected as much from Xenois’s pathetic little mate.”

The insult rolled off me like water, meaningless after everything I’d endured. “We’re here because we’ve found some new ways to make you suffer, I replied calmly, stepping closer to the bars.
Andy’s laugh was bitter and cracked.
“Torture me all you want. I’m not telling you anything. My secrets die with me.”
“This isn’t about information,” I corrected, surprised by how steady my own voice sounded. “This is purely therapeutic. I’ll be leaving for Silver Creek soon, and this is my last opportunity to treat myself to watching you pay for what you’ve done.”
Her lips curled into a sneer that had once intimidated me. “Look at you, playing the avenging mother. You’re a monster, just like the
rest of them.”
The accusation might have stung once, back when I still cared about her opinion or worried about becoming something dark and twisted. Now it just felt hollow, a desperate attempt to wound me from someone who had lost all power to do so.
“No,” I said softly. “You’re the monster. You kidnapped my four-year-old son and spent five years systematically destroying his mind. You tortured him into believing that love was conditional, that family was something to be earned through perfect obedience. You stole five years of memories we can never get back, five years of birthdays and bedtime stories and all the small moments that make a
childhood worth living.”
Andy’s expression flickered, just for a moment, with something that might have been regret. But it was gone so quickly I wondered if
I’d imagined it.
Lyn stepped forward, his magical aura crackling with barely contained energy.
“Thanks for all those encouraging talks, by the way,” he said conversationally.
“All those times you told me I was a disgrace, that Zade was keeping me hidden because he was ashamed of having a werewitch for a mate. That he’d never publicly acknowledge our relationship because I was male and magically tainted.”
Andy’s eyes glittered with malicious satisfaction. “Did I lie? Look at you, still his dirty little secret after all these years.”
Lyn’s smile was radiant, transforming his entire face with joy.
“Actually, we’re going public next month. Zade’s done hiding who he is, who we are together. We’re planning the ceremony and
everything.”
The words hit me like a physical blow, but in the best possible way. I stopped mid-breath, turning to stare at Lyn with shock and delight warring in my chest. Lynn mirrored my expression, her mouth falling open in surprise.
“Oh my God!” I exclaimed, momentarily forgetting where we were and why we’d come. “When did this happen? Congratulations! Why
didn’t you tell us?”

Lynn was bouncing on her toes with excitement. “Lyn! This is huge! I’m so happy for you!”

Lyn blushed, running a hand through his hair with embarrassment. “Oh, sorry. I thought I had told you. It’s all been so surreal and
wonderful. Zade’s been waking me up every morning with these intense makeout sessions, and he’s been learning new things too. Like, he
actually got on his knees and gave me the most incredible blowjob, that me ade me see stars. He literally deepthroathed-”
He caught himself mid-sentence, remembering our audience, and cleared his throat loudly. “Right. Not the time or place for that
conversation.”
I was grinning despite the circumstances, my heart swelling with genuine happiness for my friend. After everything Lyn had endured,
seeing him find love and acceptance felt like a small miracle.
But Andy’s snarl of rage brought us back to the present reality. “How touching,” she spat. “A family reunion in my honor. What’s next,
group hugs?”
The moment of levity faded as I remembered why we were here.
“Actually,” I said, my voice dropping back to that eerily calm tone, “we were wondering if you knew how long it takes a human being
to die after being slowly cooked to death.”
