Chapter 80
Mrs. Henderson was a woman in her fifties with grey hair which was pulled back in a practical bun and she had kind intelligent eyes behind her glasses.
She looked up as we entered, and I saw her expression shift from professional politeness to something more guarded when she recognized me.
“Mrs. Kingston,” she said carefully with a blank expression on her face as she turned to Riley and gave him a smile. “Riley. Welcome to our classroom.”
“Thank you so much for accommodating Riley on such short notice,” I said, as I displayed my most charming smile.
“I know the advanced program doesn’t usually accept new students mid-year, but Riley is exceptionally gifted. I’m confident he’ll be a wonderful addition
to your class.”
Mrs. Henderson’s smile was polite but didn’t reach her eyes as she seemed suspicious of me.
“Yes, I received the paperwork from the administration office. And I also got some calls from Xenois’s parents who were quite insistent that Riley be placed here under my care. It’s only because Riley’s placement test scores were quite impressive, that I considered accepting him into my class.”
Good, Silvia Blackwood had kept her word when she said that she would make sure Riley got in, And not only that, I knew Riley would get in because of good grades as I’d spent weeks coaching Riley on exactly what answers to give, drilling him on advanced concepts until he could recite them perfectly. The compulsion spell ensured he would perform exactly as I needed him to when it mattered.

‘Riley is very excited to be here,” I continued, placing my hand on his shoulder in what I hoped looked like a maternal gesture as I looked down at him
and asked. “Aren’t you, sweetheart?”
“Yes, Mama,” Riley replied obediently.
Mrs. Henderson crouched down to Riley’s eye level, her expression softening slightly as she spoke to him. “Are you ready for class, Riley? We have some
very interesting activities planned for today.”
Riley nodded, his face carefully blank. Mrs. Henderson studied him for a moment, as I saw her eyes frowning a bit at the non-enthusiastic expression
that Riley was giving her.
“Well then,” she said, straightening up as she added”Why don’t you choose a seat, Riley? We’ll be starting our morning circle in just a few minutes.”
I leaned down to kiss Riley’s forehead, making sure my voice was loud enough for anyone nearby to hear. “Have a wonderful day, my darling boy. Mama
will see you this afternoon.”
Just as I straightened up, I heard familiar voices in the hallway. Lumina’s warm laugh carried through the doorway, followed by Ollie’s excited chatter
about returning back to school after his medical leave.
Perfect timing.
They appeared in the doorway moments later – Lumina looking beautiful as usual in casual clothes, and Ollie practically bouncing with excitement. The boy’s face lit up when he saw Riley, and he immediately rushed over with his arms outstretched.
‘Riley! You’re in my class! This is going to be so awesome!”
But Riley didn’t return the enthusiasm. Instead of hugging Ollie back or even smiling, he stood perfectly still, allowing Ollie’s embrace without
reciprocating.

I watched Ollie’s face fall slightly at Riley’s lack of response, saw the confusion and hurt that flickered across his features.
“Hello, Lumina,” I said pleasantly, as if I hadn’t noticed the awkward interaction between the boys. “What a lovely coincidence that our sons are in the same class.”
“Yes,” Lumina replied, her voice carefully neutral as her eyes moved between Riley and Ollie. “What a coincidence indeed.”
