Chapter 81
LUMINA

Something was wrong, but I wasn’t able to place my hand on what it was. This Riley wants the same Riley that has spent a sleepover
in my house. This Riley was the Riley that was always acting off whenever he was with Sophia.
Or maybe I was just being too suspicious. Sophia was Riley’s mum but I felt something wasn’t normal here. I could feel it in my bones
as I watched Sophia hover over Riley like a predator guarding its prey.
The way she spoke to him, the way he responded with that flat, emotionless tone – it made my skin crawl.
“Have a wonderful day, sweetheart,” I said to Ollie, bending down to give him a quick hug as he hugged me back. His excitement about returning back to his class was infectious, and I tried to focus on that instead of the strange tension I felt whenever Sophia was
around.
“I will, Mama! Riley and I are going to have so much fun together!”
But as I looked over at Riley, I noticed he wasn’t happy like Ollie was. In fact, he seemed almost… distant. Cold, even. The warm, shy boy from the sleepover had been replaced by someone who looked like a smaller, more subdued version of his mother.
“Riley,” I said gently, trying to catch his attention as he turned to look at me without so much as a smile on his face. “I hope you have a good day too. If you need anything, Mrs. Henderson is wonderful, and Ollie will help you with whatever you need.”
Riley’s eyes met mine briefly, and for just a moment, I thought I saw something flicker there, like a recognition of the kid that I knew from the sleepover. But then it was gone, and it was replaced by that blank, obedient expression that seemed to be his default look.
“Thank you, Miss Lumina,” he said quietly.
I said my goodbyes to Mrs. Henderson and made my way towards the exit, eager to get away from the strange atmosphere that seemed to follow Sophia wherever she went. But as I reached the school’s front doors, I heard footsteps behind me.
“Lumina, wait!”
I turned to see Sophia who seemed to be chasing after me, her heels clicking against the polished floor. My first instinct was to keep walking, but something in her expression made me stop. She looked… happy. Like she’d just won some kind of game I didn’t even know
we were playing.
“I’m so glad we ran into each other,” she said breathlessly, catching up to me near the entrance as she looked at me from head to toe.
“I was hoping we could have a little chat.”
“About what?” I asked, keeping my guard up. Anything that Sophia wanted to talk about seemed like a trap and it wasn’t one that 1 was going to fall into.

Chapter 81
“About our situation,” she said, her voice sounding both fake and sweet as she seemed to be enjoying what was going on.
“I think it’s time we addressed the elephant in the room, don’t you?”
I stared at her, completely confused by what she meant as I was curious enough to ask.
“What elephant?”
Sophia’s smile got wider, and I saw something like cruelty flash through her eyes as she continued speaking.
“Come now, Lumina. We’re both adults here. Surely you’ve noticed how things have been changing lately?”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Xenois, of course.” She said his name, like it was a treat and she was savoring it, like it belonged to her.

“Haven’t you noticed how different he’s been since I came back? How much more… attentive he’s become to my needs? Even after that disastrous dinner with his family when I had that little stumble, he called me and talked to me over the phone about how I was the only
one in his life.”
