Chapter 82
My blood ran cold. “Excuse me?”

“Oh, don’t play dumb. It’s not attractive. Sophia’s polite mask was slowly cracking revealing the cruel and condescending woman she
was underneath.
“Everyone can see it – his parents certainly have. They’ve always preferred me, you know. Always thought I was the better choice for
their son.”
“That’s not true,” I said, but even as the words left my mouth in defense. I remembered that Silvia had rubbed it on my face and told
my husband to cheat on me with Sophia.
I still remembered the conversation that I had overheard on the phone yesterday when Silvia was talking to Ollie. The way Silvia had talked about Riley becoming part of the family although my sweet boy was unaware of its true implications.
“Isn’t it?” Sophia laughed, and it felt like she was mocking me as she continued speaking.
*Silvia calls me regularly, you know. She tells me how disappointed she is that Xenois settled for the murderer that killed her daughter all in the name of an arranged marriage instead of fighting for what he really wanted. She tells me how much she misses having
me around.”
“Even if that were true,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady as I took a deep breath and exhaled, trying not to fall apart like she
wanted,
“it doesn’t matter. Xenois and I are mated. We have a son together. We’re a family.”
“Are you, though?” Sophia tilted her head, to the side, as she was studying me like I was something interesting under a microscope.
“Because from where I’m standing, it looks like Xenois is just going through the motions of being married without actually being interested and invested in it. All I see is that he has been playing the part of the dutiful mate until he can figure out how to get what he
really wants.”
“Stop. The word came out harsher than I intended, but I couldn’t help it. Every instinct I had in me was screaming at me to get away from this woman, to protect myself and my family from whatever poison she was trying to spread.
“I understand this must be difficult for you, Sophia continued, her voice filled with false sympathy.
“But I think it would be better for everyone if we could come to some kind of… arrangement.”
“What kind of arrangement?”
“Well, you can’t leave Silver Creek without Xenois’s explicit permission – we both know that. The pack laws are very clear about mates and their territorial restrictions, especially when it comes to an arranged marriage where both individuals are forced into it. * Her smile

widened as she continued speaking confidently.

“So when Xenois finally comes to his senses and chooses me, I thought perhaps you could stay on as a nanny. Someone to help with
the boys.”
The cruelty in her words hit me like a blow as I felt my breath hitch in my throat.

She was talking about my son my child like he was just another possession to be divided up in some imaginary custody
arrangement.
“You’re insane,” I whispered.
“I’m practical,” she corrected with a wave of her hand. “And I’m trying to be generous. I could make your life very comfortable, Lumina. A nice little cottage somewhere on the outskirts of town, a modest allowance, the chance to see Ollie regularly. All I ask is that you be polite and pleasant when we interact. Make this transition as smooth as possible.”
“There isn’t going to be any transition,” I said, my voice getting stronger with each word.
“Xenois loves me. We’re bonded. You can’t just
“Can’t I?” Sophia’s laugh was cold and bitter. “Darling, you’ve been married for six years, and he’s still keeping you chained up in this city like a prisoner. If that’s not a sign that something is fundamentally wrong with your relationship, I don’t know what is.”
