The words hit their mark because they contained the truth that I’d been trying to ignore all this while, married to Xenois The fact
that Xenois had never offered to lift the restrictions that was planned on me, when I first got married to him because his family were
afraid that I might run away in the night.
The fact that Xenois never suggested that I might want to travel or visit family outside the pack lands, had always been a source of
subtle resentment between us.
“At least I’m not a homewrecker,” I shot back, anger finally taking over my shock as I fought back, brimming in anger as I wished I could pull her hair off her head.
“Homewrecker?” Sophia’s eyebrows rose in a mock surprise as she rolled her eyes in amusement and replied. “Honey, you can’t wreck something that was never really built. Your marriage is an arrangement, nothing more. It was a business transaction that has outlived his usefulness. Besides it’s not as if he would take notice of Ollie and you once that he has Riley and me.”
Something inside me snapped, hearing those disgusting words out of her mouth.
All the years of feeling like an outsider in my own family, all the politeness and swallowed pride that I had to endure and all the times I’d bitten my tongue when Xenois’s parents made their disapproval clear, with his expression or words- it all came rushing to the
surface, filling me with rage.
My hand moved before I could stop it, as I slapped Sophia’s cheek hard enough that it echoed through the empty hallway. She stumbled backward, her hand flying to her face, genuine shock replacing the smug smile that had been there moments before.
“You bitch!” she gasped, and I felt a moment of prime satisfaction at seeing her perfect composure crack.
“Stay away from my family,” I said, my voice keeping my voice low and threatening. “Stay away from my son. And stay away from my husband, or I would show you hell in this city.”
But even as I said the words, I heard footsteps behind me. Heavy, familiar footsteps that made my heart sink.
“What the hell is going on here?”
I turned to see Xenois moving toward us, his face squeezed with anger. But the anger wasn’t directed at Sophia, who was still holding her cheek and looking like a victim that had done nothing wrong.
The anger was directed at me.
“Xenois,” I started, but he cut me off with a look that made my blood run cold as I took a step back in reflex.
‘Did you just hit her?” His voice was low and dangerous, taking a tone that he had never used with me before. “Did you just assault

“I don’t care what she was doing. You don’t hit people, Lumina. What is wrong with you?”
The injustice of it all, the man that I thought I knew was my husband, left me speechless. This was the man who had held me gently just yesterday, who had made love to me with passion and revered my body like a goddess. Now he was looking at me like I was a stranger, like I was something disgusting he’d found on the bottom of his shoe.
“Xenois, please,” Sophia said, her voice shaking with what seemed like genuine fear but I knew that she was acting. The look in her
eyes said it all.
“Don’t be angry with her. I’m sure she didn’t mean it. I probably said something that upset her without realizing it.”
The way she was acting needed an Oscar as best pretender of the year.
The way she made it seem like she was protecting me from his anger instead of the other way around.
But what was more disturbing was the way Xenois responded to it, the way his expression softened when he looked at her.
“Are you all right?” he asked her, his voice gentle in a way that made my heart break seeing my mate fuss over a stranger. “Do you
need medical attention?”
“I’m fine,” she said, lowering her hand to reveal a red mark on her cheek as her eyes watered a bit as she added. “Really, it’s nothing.”
