Chapter 84

“It’s not nothing,” he said firmly, then turned back to me with that cold, angry expression. “This is completely unacceptable behavior, Lumina. I’m ashamed of you, I thought after the stove incident, when you burned her hand for no reason at all, you would change. You are my mate and yet acting like someone I can even imagine I got mated to in the first place. Is this your true behavior behind my back? Are you really this cruel of a person, Lumina? Did I make a mistake all along?.”

The words hit me like a physical blow. In all our years together, through all our ups and downs, he had never spoken to me like this.

Never looked at me with such disgust and disappointment.

“You don’t understand,” I said desperately, trying to explain, trying to get him to see the truth..yes it was true that I had burned her before but I was only retaliating after she had done something disgusting.

“She was saying terrible things about our marriage, about our family. She was

“I don’t want to hear it,” he cut me off, shaking his head as he couldn’t even bear to look at me in the eyes. “There’s no excuse for violence. You need to apologize to Sophia right now.”

“I will not apologize to her,” I said, my own anger returning as I clenched my fists and gritted my teeth as if my life depended on it.

“She’s the one who -”

“Lumina.” His tone issues a warning, and I saw something in his eyes that I’d never seen before. Something that looked almost like…

hatred.

That’s when I lost it completely.

My hand shot out again, this time slapping Sophia with even more force than before. She cried out and stumbled backward, tears springing to her eyes as she looked at me with what appeared to be genuine shock.

“Lumina!” Xenois roared, and I turned to face him with all the fury and hurt and confusion I’d been carrying bottled up inside me.

“How dare you,” I said, my voice shaking with emotion as I took a deep breath and pointed at him angrily as I let the words spill out

of my mouth.

“How dare you take her side against me. I’m your mate, Xenois. I’m the mother of your child. And you’re treating me like I’m the

enemy.”

“You’re acting like the enemy,” he shot back, his own anger matching mine as he stepped closer frustrated with me.

“This is insane behavior, even for you.”

“Even for me?” I stared at him in disbelief. “What is that supposed to mean?”

But I didn’t wait for an answer. Instead, I did something I’d never done before in all our years together.

I slapped him.

The sound echoed through the hallway like a gunshot, and for a moment, all three of us stood frozen. Xenois raised his hand to his

cheek, staring at me with an expression I couldn’t read.

“I’m done,” I said quietly, my voice surprisingly calm despite the chaos raging inside me. I shook my head from left to right as I let

out a small laugh and continued speaking.

“Whatever game you two are playing, whatever this is, I’m done with it.”

I turned and walked away, my heels clicking against the floor with sharp, angry sounds. I wasn’t going to stand here and be humiliated like this especially with the crowd that seemed to be gathering around us.

Behind me, I could hear Sophia’s voice, soft and soothing, saying something to Xenois that I couldn’t make out.

I didn’t look back.

By the time I reached my car, my hands were shaking so badly I could barely get the key in the ignition. When I finally got the engine started, I sat there for a moment, trying to process what had just happened. I really thought after the family dinner incident, that Xenois had finally opened his eyes and realized that Sophia was trying to to drive us apart. His words, the way he defended me and took my side, was that all an act, to get me not to act out? But this morning as well, he seemed the same..he looked at me with adoration in his eyes and had kissed me thoroughly before he left for work only to see him an hour later filled with disgust towards me.

My husband – my mate, the father of my child – had just chosen another woman over me. In public. In front of our son’s school.

And I had no idea why.
