Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 85

Chapter 85

SOPHIA

The pain that I had gotten from Lumina’s slap was nothing compared to the rush of satisfaction that flowed through me as I

watched her storm away. Heartbroken.

My plan worked perfectly well. Xenois was choosing my side over hers, coupled with the public humiliation of his precious mate, and not forgetting as well the seeds of doubt I’d planted about their relationship.

The only thing that could have made it more perfect was if more people had been around to witness it.

But as I watched Lumina’s car disappear down the street, I noticed something concerning, about Xenois’s expression, which made me

worried.

Despite everything that had just happened, despite seeing his mate assault me twice in less than five minutes.

Xenois was still worried and concerned for the bitch that had just publicly embarrassed him.

The compulsion spell was working – I could see it in the way he’d immediately taken my side, the way he’d been so protective of me, and not giving his mate a chance to explain herself. But the modification spell that Andy helped me with, it seemed like it wasn’t

complete.

His natural mate bond was still fighting against the magic, still pulling him toward Lumina even when common sense and the spell told him that Lumina was in the wrong here.

I needed to strengthen my position, making sure that I was able to turn Xenois completely to my side while I had the chance.

“Xenois,” I said softly, letting my voice shake as I raised my hand to touch the burning skin of my cheek.

“I… I don’t understand what I did wrong.”

He turned to look at me, and I saw the moment that he acted worried, as he took on my apparent distress. The spell was doing its work, making him want to comfort me, to prioritize my emotional well-being over anyone else.

“You didn’t do anything wrong,” he said firmly, his voice sounding gentle in a way that made my heart race a little.

He shook his head bitterly as he added. “Lumina was completely out of line. I’m so sorry this happened to you.”

“I just…” I stopped, for a brief moment letting my voice break slightly as I continued taking a deep breath.

“I was trying to be friendly, to make conversation. I know she doesn’t like me, but I never imagined she would actually hurt me.”

Xenois’s jaw clenched, and I could see anger flashing in his eyes. And this time the anger wasn’t directed at me, but at Lumina.

Perfect. Every word I spoke was driving a wedge deeper between them and making her look like the villain.

“She’s been acting strange lately, he muttered, as if he was talking more to himself than to me. “Paranoid, aggressive. This isn’t like

her at all.”

“Maybe it is like her,” I said carefully, making sure I sounded reluctant like, I didn’t want to speak ill of his mate.

“Maybe you just haven’t seen this side of her before.”

He looked at me immediately with his eyes narrowed at me, and I held my breath, wondering if I’d pushed too far. But then his expression changed to that which looked almost like pity.

this.”

“You’re hurt,” he said, reaching out to gently touch my cheek where Lumina’s hand had left its mark. “We should get some ice on

The contact sent electricity through my body as I resisted the urge to let out a moan. What I couldn’t wait to get this man in my bed.

“I’m okay,” I said, but I didn’t pull away from his touch, but rather leaned into it, seeking comfort while still playing the act of an innocent victim. “Really, I don’t want to make a big deal out of this.”

“It is a big deal,” he said firmly. “No one should ever lay a hand on you in anger. No one.”

The conviction in his voice, the way he was looking at me like I was something precious that needed protecting – it was everything I’d dreamed of during those lonely nights when I was far away from him and watching him build a family with Lumina. The compulsion spell was working better than I’d dared hope.

“Xenois,” I said, taking a step closer to him as I prepared myself. “I need to tell you something.”

“What is it?”

I took a deep breath, and exhaled “I know this might sound crazy, but I’ve been thinking about us lately, ever since you helped me find my footing back in the city and be there for both me and Riley. I had been thinking about what we had before, and what we could

have again.”

His expression shifted from confusion as it became more guarded. “Sophia…”

“I know you’re married. I know you have responsibilities. But seeing you again, being near you… it’s brought back so many memories. So many feelings I thought I’d buried.”

I let tears gather in my eyes, real genuine tears this time around as I continued speaking. “I never stopped loving you, Xenois. Not for

a single day.”

“Don’t,” he said, but his voice was softer now, less certain, like he didn’t want to hurt me. “Don’t do this.”

“I can’t help it, I whispered, moving closer still as I was leaning against his chest as I continued speaking. And I think… I think maybe you feel it too. The way you look at me sometimes, the way you’re always so protective of me. It’s like no time has passed at all.”

I saw something pass across his face. It looked like desire. The spell was making him more less resistant to my influence, more likely to see me in a romantic light. But I could also see him fighting it, trying to maintain his loyalty to his mate.

“I care about you,” he said finally, and my heart soared, when I heard this from his mouth. “I’ll always care about you. But Lumina is my mate. She’s my wife, the mother of my child. I can’t just throw that away.”

“Even when she treats you like this?” I insisted, gesturing toward my bruised cheek as I added with a little bit of frustration present in my voice. “Even when she publicly humiliates you and shows such disrespect for your authority?”

“She’s going through something,” he said, but I could hear the doubt that was entering his voice as I could see that he was making

excuses that he didn’t believe either.

“She’s been under a lot of stress lately.”

“Stress doesn’t excuse violence,” I said, echoing his own words from earlier. “And it doesn’t excuse the way she’s been treating you. I’ve seen how she looks at you, Xenois. Like you’re more of an obligation than a partner.”

“That’s not true.”
