Chapter 86

SOPHIA

“Isn’t it?” I moved closer, close enough that I could smell his cologne, and could feel the warmth radiating from his body. “When was

the last time she looked at you the way I’m looking at you right now?”

His breath caught slightly, and I knew I was getting through to him. The compulsion spell was amplifying every interaction I had with him and also interfering with, every moment of doubt about his relationship with Lumina.

“Your parents see it too,” I continued, pressing my advantage. “They’ve always known that we belonged together, the family dinner was a prime example of that fact. The perfect Luna for the perfect Alpha. His Ying to his Yang. Me.”

“My parents?” He looked troubled for a moment as he narrowed his eyes, and I realized I might have revealed too much, which might end up breaking the spell, so I quickly backtracked. Silvia had told me that Xenois wasn’t happy when she brought up getting a new mate which means if I focused on that. He might recall that anger and break loose from it.

“They’ve been so kind to me since I returned,” I said quickly. “So welcoming. I think they see how much happier you are when I’m

around.”

The lie came easily, but it was based on enough truth to be believable. Silvia had indeed been encouraging about my relationship with Xenois, had made it clear that she thought I was a better match for her son than his current mate.

him.

“Even if that were true,” Xenois said, his voice strained, the effects of subconsciously trying to fight the compulsion spell had done on

“it doesn’t matter. I made vows to Lumina. I gave her my word.”

“Vows that she’s clearly not respecting,” I pointed out. “A marriage that brings you nothing but stress and conflict. You could have so much more, Xenois. We could have so much more.”

I reached up and touched the necklace at his throat – the same necklace that was the reason the compulsion spell was able to work. Just like an identical one to Riley. I could control whomever was wearing the necklace.

He’d worn it every day for six years, believing it was a gift from Lumina as I delivered it to him under Lumina’s name, and he never knew the truth. That it was actually the tool I was using to claim his heart.

“This is beautiful,” I said softly, my fingers tracing the silver chain as I looked at him and continued speaking. “Lumina has good

taste.”

“She gave it to me when we got married,’ he said, his voice distant. “Said it was a symbol of our bond.”

If only he knew the truth. The necklace was indeed a symbol, but not of his bond with Lumina. It was a symbol of my determination to take back what was initially mine.

“She must love you very much,” I said, hating every word but knowing it was necessary to maintain the illusion of trying to be on his side and not appear as a homewrecker. “To give you something so meaningful.”

“I thought she did,” he said quietly, and I heard the pain in his voice, as his hands fingered the chain subconsciously shaking his

head. “But after today… I don’t know anymore.”

Perfect.

“You deserve someone who sees your worth,” I said, letting my hand rest on his chest. “Someone who appreciates everything you do, everything you are. Someone who would never hurt you the way she just hurt me.”

His eyes met mine, and I saw something change in them.

“Sophia,” he said, his voice rough with emotion and desire.

“I know this is complicated,” I whispered, rising up on my tiptoes to bring my face closer to his as I spoke near his lips. “But maybe… maybe we could try again. Maybe we could see if what we had was real.”
